I've been seeing a lot of posts lately asking about how people can have DID if they don't experience abuse, or childhood trauma, or thinking their DID case is "odd" in some way, so I've decided to make this thread instead of trying to post on every thread like that!

(I've also included threads for those wondering about switches, co-consciousness, switching symptoms, co-hosting, and stuff like that, as well as those dealing with denial/doubt. And I added two threads at the end that deal with communicating, accepting, understanding, and working with alters).
***IMPORTANT: Please keep in mind that DID is a very personal disorder! Every person is different, and so every DID system is different! It doesn't mean anything if you don't fit "the norm"!***

** note: it is impossible for anyone to have more than one personality. this is why MPD was changed to DID. all alters/fragments are parts that make up one personality, one person. alters are parts of a personality, different "sides" of one personality, not separate personalities themselves. DID deals with alters and parts, NOT separate/multiple personalities. and it is an identity and dissociative condition/disorder, NOT a personality condition/disorder.
