Toxic and controlling parents

I am an adult man, who has extremely dysfunctional parents. Bottom line is they are extremely immature, self centered, and do not care about my success or future. They pretend they care, and want me to stay with them forever, but it is financially motivated. The only reason is because they believe they will have to pay my rent forever. They want me to work from their tiny 1 bedroom apartment, while they give me ...

Partner's Narcassitic Mother

Basically I've had enough of her, everything she does is a lie and fake and done to be nasty to me and my partner. I moved into her house back in November 2018 to save money so that me and my partner (her son) could afford to rent our own place. Prior to me moving she was all sweet and caring (now know that all to have been fake). Me and my partner pay her ...

Help with bdp questions

So I’ve been in a relation ship with someone that is undiagnosed with bdp for 21/2 years. Her mom is diagnosed and her older brother. We are on are third breakup. Both times previously it was the same cycle. She would start pushing me away for a few weeks, constantly think I’m doing something behind her back to the point she almost makes up things in her mind, and then things would end. Then she ...

At My Wits End

I have been married to my husband for almost 17 years and when we first met he was the loving husband who always complimented me, was so good to me, who couldn’t do enough for me even though I did see some warning signs but at the time he would lie to me( I was stupid enough not to realize this) and talk his way out of it and I stupidly believed and forgave him. ...

I need help with an important decision

I'm 18, I haven't a lot of experience in the world yet alone obviously but I've met this guy a while back when I was 16 online and we were friends, one summer we spent it all together just talking & he became my best friend basically. All i've ever thought about was him when I'd get home from my part-time job. So eventually, when summer was closing towards the end, he got kicked out ...

Dysthymia and Relationships

Hello All,

I’m a 60-year-old man who’s long battled with dysthymia, and I have a question – a complex one, perhaps – about the link between this condition and a propensity toward failed relationships. I’m not looking for coddling here, but rather for some good, honest feedback.

A bit of history: Undoubtedly, I’ve been grappling with attachment issues and dysthymia for most of my life, as my mom and dad were away from me during ...

Marriage affected by mental illness and alcoholism

Several years ago my wife had a psychotic break—hallucinations, delusions, and detachment from the real world—and was hospitalized for a short time (less than two weeks). A short while after being released she began drinking, having never before done so, and soon became an alcoholic, getting drunk every night. I refused to be an enabler, and would not accept her arguments that she was not abusing alcohol. Ultimately, she used a pretextual excuse to move ...
