We are all deaf to certain degrees. Some of us (like myself) enjoy using the cochlear implant, however there is at least one of us that will take it off and only use sign language. There isn't a Deaf community near us, for us to participate in. I have taken many ASL classes to learn what I know of for sign language. (Mara) the one that I know of for sure that refuses the CI, would love to join the Deaf community.
I think Thea only evolved because we got sent to a specialist college (to learn lip-reading and 'work' skills and it was 'live-in' and we were surrounded by other deaf-born students, some of whom had no speech) Then went to university and used interpreters & socialised within the deaf community there too to 'bypass' the inability to speak in public.
We were born hearing though a late talker due to the autism and having selective mutism (so when we could speak, would only speak to specific people...which is probably why the pre-16's still all identify as 'hearing' and feel 'the body is deaf' but they aren't cos they're still hearing teens (the body is in its 50's now). ..some are the same with the mobility issues ...they don't have arthritis the body does so they can't rollar skate and ride a bike anymore if they front.
I live rurally now and there's no one around who uses sign language, though we have used interpreters for medical appointments at the city hospital.
