Its not a sense of entitlement, rather a lack of one. We've been hiding this disorder from people for years now, and suddenly, they know. They think they've known us for years, then, BAM, everything's shattered. So theres bound to be questions asked by these people that we've known for centuries, it seems like, that you'd assume they'd know from the get-go. Like "Who are you right now". Can't you tell by my voice, the same one you've heard for almost 20 years now or something like that?

In fact, why do you feel entitled to constantly point out the mistakes in others, UnmotheredChild? What gives you the right to be the one who says "Why this" or "Why that"? You might not be the only one not annoyed by these questions, but this is supposed to be a safe forum where people can say this kind of $#%^ without consequence. If you would like to complain, start a topic and say it there. But not here. Makes you look like an attacker, not someone sympathetic to ones with alters, understand? Thanks, and have a nice day.

People in society always resist change and fear what they don't understand. There isnt any way they can understand our situation fully unless they live it. Best thing can do is to just show them facts and educate them. If they don't want to learn, they won't. Then you should probably tell them to F OFF at that point.

...Excuse him, I guess.

I've told my SO many times that I have others with me, and he points out that there are "other sides to me" but will NOT acknowledge them as actual beings. Won't even acknowledge that I am broken up into different parts. I've been told, "you're just separating your emotions and you THINK they are separate from you!" and I said, "Well YES that's exactly what I've been trying to tell you! I don't deal with all of those emotions, others inside do." ".....You're just crazy."

Here's another one from my SO:
Him: "Do you like hear voices inside your head or something? You act like a 9 year old and then like a grouchy man and then like an old woman sometimes. What the hell is wrong with you?"
Me: "...Yeah I do actually... And it's exactly what you just said."
Him: "....You're f*cking confusing. There's no one 'inside' you."

What the hell?

I can understand simple questions from people who would never in their life think about being split up into other people or how it all works. But when you have all the information at your disposal like someone else here said, you have no sympathy from me that you "don't get it".

I'm going to have to agree with unmotheredchild, even though I think the presentation of the thought was misguided.

A lot of people, myself included, think that our problems should be understood by others as soon as they hear about them. Then we get upset if they don't understand what we live with and want to ask questions, even the stupid or condescending ones. People who don't have MPD or DID will never understand what it is like to have more than just you inside your body and mind. So, why should we expect that they should just get it as soon as they find out about the multiple personalities? That's an arrogant thing to feel.

I'm not upset that whoever I would tell about this would not get it and probably never will. Questions are innocent, most of the time, when someone doesn't live the same way you do. Curiosity is natural in all people. I think if I would feel that upset about someone asking a question that I find dumb or inconsiderate then I have the wrong idea of what I expect out of those around me. I certainly don't expect that if they have known me for years that they should know better than me about the issue also. How could they? Ever? They don't have the problems I do, so what will they know about it? Nothing, unless I educate them about the issue. I would never be offended if someone were to not "catch on" just because they've known me for years. Not everyone is so in tune with mental health and psychology to figure the mysteries of DID out, and damn it if we don't even freaking get it ourselves.

Even though I have just figured out that l am not alone in here i have always known I was different and reacted differently than most people. Sometimes understanding how other people worked or even figuring out just what was going on after gapping involved a lot of stupid questions. I always joked that I was the smartest dumbest girl in the world. I got laughed at a lot. I dealt with it by laughing at myself. Now I kinda get to laugh when people don't get 'me'. And the best part is I am not laughing alone and when I love someone they too can laugh with (most of) us once we explain just how dumb their comment was. If I don't love em I move on (and laugh).

That said we don't feel its anyone's responsibility to understand us but we have a unique perspective and generally a really dark sense of humour (which seems fairly pervasive on this forum) so we will probably just laugh.

That said. A few of us in here are pretty good if you put us on a stage (hams the lot of em) After telling a close friend what was up I got' so that's what's up with you. I never thought you were THAT good of an actress. ' I laughed. I really am not. But some of us are.

Keep in mind there is a line between someone trying to understand and can't with someone who doesn't want to try.

My mother for instance firmly believes ANY mental illness can be cured by yourself. You just have to be "strong enough" to do so, and if you are not, pray to God for him to give you strength. Absurd!

This man I'm having to share a house with believes anyone who has a mental illness is unnatural and it is free to be taken advantage of and/or made fun of. The person's fault they are made fun of; because they should just check into a mental institute to "fix" anything thats not stereotypical of society -- or stay there forever if you can't.

These people will never be reasoned to, never get the right facts, because they don't want to.

Those two above need their faces smashed in to really learn this lesson.

If you run into anyone like this, just F em. Get away and never speak to them

Yet, if you find someone who will genuinely try to understand or not trigger you; give them patience

No harm in my opinion though, to poke fun at funny questions.
