Video on YouTube has screen shot of THIS forum page

Yes, LITERALLY- not like the main page with the categories, but OUR DID forum page... without blurring the site name or ppls' screen names.

The subject should make it clear this COULD be triggering- so don't go to the vid if it will.

I KNOW it's not private... it's on the internet, but for real this really felt like the vid dude stuck a camera up my skirt. It was so exposing... and it's not even in a BAD way when he mentions it, like saying ppl that talk on places like this generally aren't the fakers for the cute pop culture fetish of having a mental health issue (which is the topic of the vid- how pop culture "cutesifies" it as like something fetish and pretty to have- like Harley Quinn, one of his main points is based on her and the sexualized "fun" nature of her disorders).

But wow... IDK I just felt it was tacky to even show the screen shot- AT LEAST he could have used the main PF page with all the categories, or blurred names or something. Maybe I'm like being oversensitive but it really triggered me.

The vid is this one- and it's ok, aside from some misconceptions about DID he has... the screenshot part is at like 19m20s in or so.

Hey Pixie, sorry you were upset/triggered by that.

I didn't watch the video but I skipped to the bit with the screenshot just to see who's names & how recent. I agree with you its tacky and poor manners or whatever.

Maybe obscuring the usernames would have been better but anyone viewing the video could just find the forum and look for themselves. We'd have been way more upset if he was like going into threads, like someone's journey thread or something and showing their posts and stuff. Just showing the topic list isn't so bad.

And like, there's 50 'guests' in here right now while I'm typing, who could be anyone here to gawk. Or lurkers questioning DID.

I don't mean to like, make light of it, cos I do agree its bad manners, but its not showing anyone stuff they coudln't see on their own?

I guess for us we kinda think about the stuff in the forum rules and all - think twice before posting and all that stuff, cos PF specifically is public and everything posted here is forever, and viewable by anyone, whether they log in or not?

Remembering that has definitely made us think twice about posting some stuff.

Zor replied to the video and used a good analogy of WHY it was poor manners... said it was like a girl with a dress over her swimsuit- yes, the forums ARE public and WE KNOW THIS... but like the dress, we CHOOSE when to take it off, when to post... and that was like exposing it without us knowing or something, like looking up the dress.

It was mostly shocking... cuz like IDK... it just was. AT LEAST it wasn't like hateful, or hurtful- the video, and even the specific comments about the forums- are GOOD. But still. Just cuz it's got good intentions doesn't mean it wasn't a bit invasive or tacky or something.

And your comment about "thinking twice" cuz of that, we totally do that, too... probably a bit more after last night when I ran across that video.

I'm sorry you got triggered. I guess I always keep in mind that this forum is totally public. I found it by Googling specific questions I had about DID, and I'm so glad that I was able to read posts without having to register or give any information about myself at all.

I remember thinking that posters on here were being SO brave to put out all that information publicly for anyone to read. And I know that when I post, even though I make sure not to give specific facts that might reveal who I am, I'm not thinking about random people reading it but about my friends on here.

I guess I think of it as kind of a support group that's happening on the radio, where a silent audience can listen, completely anonymously, and benefit from what they hear, and whoever chooses to can make the leap to join in.

I think the video represents it correctly, and not in a way that will have people flocking to it, fortunately.

I get why Pixie as surprised (I was, too), but it IS public... and honestly, if even ONE person with DID or something else that PF has on it, comes here and finds comfort, help, and community- like WE HAVE- b/c of this video... that slightly inappropriate (arguably) screenshot showing will have done a GOOD THING.

It IS the internet, NOTHING is private- even in "private" groups and pages... it's never entirely private. There is ALWAYS risk of things being seen and found- and these forums are NOT even hidden.

I read these a little before I first posted, too. Mostly b/c I was in SHOCK over being told what I was going through was dissociative. It wasn't until I'd been reading others' posts here and seeing how NOT ALONE I was in my struggles, confusion, fear, and shame, that I decided to register and post here myself.

I, too, found this through Google (and the list of "who's online" even shows "Bing [bot]" right now). For these forums, and all of us, to help each other, to help other people- this HAS TO BE SEEN.

So yeah, it was a tad bit like "looking up the dress" when the girl was taking it off later anyway... and impolite and possibly "out of line" (I did recommend maybe using the forums' main ENTRY PAGE instead), it was't for a bad reason or to expose or hurt anyone. It was to bring to light there ARE legitimate places for people needing help to find it, to find community and others like them. THAT IS A GOOD THING.

It gives the weird sense of privacy, when it's just same systems in here messaging, but this is world wide web, and I totally understand systems who don't let their littles to post etc. That's also why I'm after not telling details about certain type of abuse, to avoid the audience we do not want in here.

Personally we woke up to it in another forum years ago, someone wrote something helpful to someone else and they reacted to it by telling they're gonna print it out and put on their fridge door, that they have some other messages in there as well. From their messages I understood that they're pretty much loners, mostly unable to get out of bed or do anything due to somatic symptoms. But still .. you're gonna WHAT?

Of course you can print these out, anyone can for any purpose. In there, there were every now and then people interested in trauma asking for interviews for school projects, one received PM from TV channel wanting to make a document about SA and they were DEVASTATED after realizing people outside the community had been following their posting for a while and picked them.

There are more private sites if you want that kind of safety, but I certainly am not going to delivered my real name and address for anyone I do not know, just based on the fact they will then have address of someone traumatized and I may have access to some secret club. They can keep their clubs among people who are that way trusty.

Sorry you were upset, it is different to know casually it's for everyone to see and actually understand it is for everyone to exploit too if they wanna. Personally I think it doesn't really matter, there's nothing that interesting in here. It's not interesting for pedophiles or ASPD-people, because there's no that kind of content, and it's not interesting to people who wanna see 28 switches in a minute either. I think we are mostly boring. Let's keep it boring, boring is good.

I watched the whole the video to gain context. I prepared myself for the worst ie my user name being on the screenshot. I thought it wouldn't bother me.

When I saw the screenshot and my user name was on there I was consumed by anger and then couldn't hear what he saying about the forum and only managed to tune back in towards the end when it was something about pyrite which fortunately distracted me because someone thought "I'd rather be pyrite because it's more sparkly" but I dunno how it got from "this is a forum" to this pyrite because when I feel exposed I feel angry and when I feel angry I end up in my head and can't hear or take things in - like alot of people I guess.

I get that this is the internet, anyone can read here. I get that but it felt like advertising or drawing unwanted attention. I was surprised how angry I felt though. Plus it seemed to be a 25min video on "mental illness is crappy" Der and "people want to have mental illness" which I don't believe, I don't believe anyone wants to have DID or schitzophrenia or bipolar or any mental illness, that makes zero sense. And then analogy with rock, something about a gate and some kind of lecture about lieing. Basically it was a pointless video. Also I can't see many people sitting through all that. So I think this forum is safe from over exposure.

But ditto, also felt a swell of negative emotion at seeing the forum and my user name was in his screenshot which did make it worse even though I prepared myself for that and I told myself it wouldn't matter.

No, it's not weird, it is different to know and understand, huge difference between intelligent side of knowing and the emotional side of understanding. We went thru that before, so we dealt with it then and it does not have the same effect anymore. It did then, and

to be honest, it felt stupid, because of course we knew. In theory.

Stating the obvious, but Psychforums insists on complete anonymity for many reasons but mostly so that people feel and are safe. Here's the first sentence of the Forum Rules:

That screenshot is there for just a few seconds. I say that mostly for people who read this but aren't posting or who may not even be members yet.
