We don't make that association. Even if we did, it wouldn't carry as much weight for us personally as the reasons we cited for disliking "singlet."

"Singlet" also sounds dismissive because it's as if people can't be bothered to say the entire word. It's as if someone addresses another person by shortening the other person's name without asking permission. We see this as disrespectful.

The good thing about this whole topic is that we decided to turn our thoughts into a blog post:

Ah, the diminutive factor, I can see how that could be construed as offensive, how about we just call 'em "Muggles"?

Muggles? Now I'm REALLY offended!

I still prefer my term as I believe it is most accurate, but I'm not going to pout if you all call me either of the other terms. However, I do believe inaccuracies fuel some of the misunderstandings and 'fear' as lain's T said. We fear what we don't understand...And I've read in the past that our language sets limits on what we are able to learn and understand. Since our culture/language has no way to express multiplicity within all people, I wonder if that's at least a part of the reason why so many people 'fear' hearing voices in their heads but I now see it as having a conversation with all parts of myself so I can come to the most balanced position possible. It also helps me be ok when I hold multiple, discordant positions. I no longer feel the need to choose sides; left/right, conservative/liberal etc. I'm learning to enjoy mosaic-al and multi-colored positions, not the simple black and white positions that people tend toward. Maybe I'm a 'crackpot' but I think I understand myself better as a result of being part of my wife's healing process. I've had to look deep inside me and figure out how I work as I've struggled to help her, but also helping the 8 girls as they heal and begin to connect has given me insight how to get better connected to all of myself...

When i hear singlet i think about that piece of clothing

For me muggles are people who are stuck in their own perception and have an obtuse thinking.

I see many muggles every day

hahahahahahaha     So, people with no magic at all. hahahahaha

samrk2 wrote:If you watch tv, movies and the written word closely you will see the writers using a lot of multiple language. We talk about being 'double minded, single minded,'. I recently watched a show that repeatedly used the phrase 'part of me'. Our culture won't go as far as admitting they hear 'voices' (because that means you are 'crazy' though we will talk about my 'inner voice' ) but if you pay attention they use all kinds of other words and phrases that those of us in the d.i.d. world associate with being 'multiple.'

Oh, I see what you mean.

I have stopped using "individuals" to refer to people, or I have used it with the word multiples too. In texts I've written or things I have said. I no longer think that there are just "individuals" out there, but "multiples" too.

hahaha Humm... Lonely? Don't know.

It seems that singleton is a short easy to use word, that maybe we need to full with a good baggage. :)

Like Im-pure, for me singlet means a piece of clothing (what a wrestler wears) and I can't get that image out of my mind so it doesn't work for me. But both singlet and singleton can refer to something that's by itself, not paired or grouped, so etymologically, both can work.

Before I knew about my DID, I read a lot about twins, as well as other topics vaguely reminiscent of multiplicity. When someone is writing about twins and needs to contrast them with non-twins, they'll often use the word singleton, as in "twins and their singleton siblings." So the parallel use makes sense to me, but primarily to make a distinction about people who aren't multiple.
Dx = DID. My blog. My personal Periodic Table of 78 alters.
