Using meditation to communicate with alters?

Postby MeAndWings » Mon Mar 04, 2013 8:07 pm

I've read that meditation can be a good way trying to communicate with your alters. How does this work, how do you do it? I'd like to communicate with my alters but I don't know how (we're not switching, as I'm aware of at least). I'm keeping a journal for us to write in (actually it's just me writing since I'm the only one up front, but I write whatever the others are feeling as well as my own feelings).

Anyone who knows about using meditation to communicate? How to do it etc? I haven't meditated before so I'd appreciate if someone could write something a bit detailed/explaining some, so that I/we understand.
I don't want to be forgotten.

I've found a link to a thread here:
dissociative-identity/topic90988.html
dissociative-identity/topic107402.html

I've heard of it before. Never tried it. I'm afraid it will bring back memories (I have an addiction for a reason ). But maybe I'll try it one time (I know a few people who do it regularly). I think I'll post it somewhere if it brings something useful.

I'll definitely watch this tread!

It absolutely can bring back memories. Very suddenly and very real. I tried it on purpose, and it was some heavy $#%^. I am not fond of meditation for this reason. Even though I am happy to have the memories now, it was a big shock to have them fall in as if I have always known them and it took us a while to digest the new input. Eventually it helped but it was really heavy.

On youtube you can find guided meditation videos, they generally help inexperienced people to practice meditation. What I did was put on one of those videos, find an undisturbed space, turn off my phones, and asked a question to 'my inner world', as one would speak to an entire system but not an alter in particular. But the asking questions part is more difficult than just trying to meditate so I guess just trying would be a good start. The internet is full of knowledge about how to practice different kinds of meditation.

a good way to start/help with mediation for communicating is first making yourself feel as safe, comfortable, calm, and relaxed as possible. put on some relaxing music, wear comfy clothes, surround yourself with things that help make you feel safe/calm, whatever helps you to feel safe and comfortable, do it before attempting to communicate. the better you feel, the better your alters might feel, and the more calm your mind is, the better chance you have of not running into subconscious barriers and the clearer/easier communication can be. also, reassure both yourself and them, either out loud or in your head, that they are safe, you are safe, the environment's safe, everything's safe, everything's ok, and it's safe and ok for them to be known about, come forward, talk to you, etc.

then just try to focus on your breathing, or any relaxing music you might have playing, or counting slowly, or something like that. try to clear your mind and not really think about anything until you're ready to try communicating.

when you're ready to try communicating, focus on an alter's name, or an image of them, or an image of the inner world, or focus on what you want to say to an alter/anyone, etc. focusing on a single thing like saying "hello? is anyone there?" can help make it "stronger" and can help it to "reach" the others inside. focusing on an alter's name or appearance can sometimes help "call" them "up front" to communicate with you.

The most common meditations are no go for me, cause it makes me lose contact with reality - feels a bit like a LSD trip.

BUT I found a specific buddhist meditation that s SPECIFICALLY created to make contact with parts of yourself.

This isn t an easy one, brace yourself. BUT it has great results. I do it on a regular basis now and my alters love that bit of time that s just for themselves.

If you want to, I can PM the meditation to you. Don t be freaked out by the lenght of explication, it takes a while to get it. That s normal. As long as you try, that s okay.

There s also a book: 'Feeding your demons' is the title. In the book there s obviously much more to say then I can telll you.
It s availablle in most shops, not too expensive and very clear.

It doesn t talk about alters but about emotions, traumas and how to deal with those. BUt I found it works for workin with alters too.

Best of luck and PM me if you want more info.

Love
