I don't think I have ever recognized AVPD in a fictional character except for Shini Ikari in Evangelion. That one is just blatently obvious for anyone familiar with AVPD
Shinji is obviously an avoidant, and what's more interesting is that Hideaki Anno, the director, based him directly on himself before he overcame his depression, meaning that he probably had avoidant tendencies himself.
When I was younger the first rpg I ever played was Final Fantasy 8 and I really connected with the main character, Squall. When I was younger my AVPD wasn't as bad, I was pretty much just shy. Anyway Squall is like the definition of a loner and I really loved his character and his attidute. In the game his most frequent line is "..." Hard and cold, abandoned as a child. Open yourself up and you get hurt, that kind of thing. The plot in the game is mainly a romance too, he meets a girl who pretty much forces her self on him and tears down his walls and teaches him to love. Awwwww.... lol right? I liked it. In the one scene she tells him that he has missed out on everything that is good in life. I kind of feel that way.
Well, when I played Final Fantasy VIII I was already an RPG veteran, but I was blown away when I saw a main character like Squall. Different from all those cliched "optimistic boy from a small village" type of characters. Very original and well developed characters, it's too bad that the rest of the cast and the plot are absolutely paper thin and that plot twist about the orphanage ruins the plot of the game completely.
If only we were all as lucky as the average RPG hero. Not only would all our deep seated mental/emotional problems be dealt with and overcome in a fashion that could only be deemed most excellent, we'd also go on loads bad ass adventures where fighting and easily defeating vicious monsters that randomly attack us for no apparent reason is the norm. Anyway, Squall is cool.
Meh, if I wanted to be inserted in a work of fiction it would be either a hentai movie or a harem anime! Hell yeah!
