This thread was too long to read through, so I don't know if someone mentioned it, but Lars and the Real Girl. Sure, he gets all delusional, but if that's not AvPD he's suffering from, I don't know what it is.
Also Jim Carrey's character in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but I don't know if that was mentioned either.

I saw lars and the real girl a while ago. I think he would be suffering from schizophrenia not avpd, but it's been a while since i've saw it so i could be wrong.

No, definitely didn't seem like schizophrenia at all, definitely more like desperate AvPD and denial, not even true delusion. I mean, it was definitely fictional, but still quite a caricature.

Ivan Shatov in Dostoevsky's The Possessed (aka The devils/demons) is somewhat an avoidant. He is interesting because he is also a character (perhaps the only in the novel) who stands up for what he thinks is right, I loved the way he was portraited.

I just had to point out that Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion is really starting to get on my nerves.

I'm only on episode 11, so hopefully she'll be more nice to Shinji later on.

Make sure you watch "The end of evanglion" which is a remake of episodes 25, 26. and the death/rebirth which helps you understand the end better.

no, shes a different kind of tragic character, her annoying personality is kind of part of it...
I watched that show a long time ago, but I didn't really click with the characters until I watched some episodes again recently. The psychology is the most interesting part to me now.
I always liked asuka though :p
