A few movies ive recognized AvPD characters:

Punch-Drunk Love (2002) - Adam Sandler in this film plays a character who is reluctant to date a woman one of his seven sisters set up for him. He shows himself as very nervous, sad and filled with lots of anxiety which could be seen as AvPD.

Heavy (1995) - Features what is most definatly an AvPD person, though never really described as such. A mid 30's, stout, pizza cook who lives with his mom who builds a unrequited love with the new employe at the restaurant, a very young Liv Tyler.

Rocket Science (2007) - Looking for answers to life's big questions, a stuttering boy joins his high school debate team. Not really AvPD, but i can relate to the boy's shyness and insecureness toward life and especially towards the oppisite sex.

Marty (1954) - Quite an old film, though its the earliest i can think of that portrays someone in their mid 30's, unmarried, single and unable to find love in his life.

Happiness (1998) - A movie with multiple plotlines and characters, Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character stands out as a lonely man who's only way to forget his misery is by making obscene phone calls, unable to come out and express himself to his attractive neighbor (or accept her less attractive neighbor's aproches)

These are the ones that come to my mind right now... ive probably seen more.

I played this for the first time only a few weeks ago, and I enjoyed it a lot. Probably the only reason I'm getting myself into RPGs now.

I've also played a few of the Final Fantasy games that both of you mention, though it was long before I could actually absorb what I was playing. Still, I enjoyed them when I did.

As for the topic at hand, I can't think of many fictional characters that haven't already been mentioned.

I just realised something. I can care deeply about a fictional character that I can strongly relate to but I hate myself. A bit of a paradox wouldnt you say?

Yeah, I feel the same way about shinji. It is a bit of a contradiction but many things in the realm of psychology are contradictory and paradoxical. Though I do have to admit that at times I felt frustrated with him, especially the whole "I'm leaving Tokyo 3/I changed my mind, I'm staying" thing but I mostly felt identified with him and I secretly wished he would get to exact revenge with Gendo (and he does. Yay!)

Actually in that scene I felt very identified with him because that would be pretty much what I would do if I was in his place. Though I don't think I would hit Toji... mainly because I'd be afraid that I wouldn't hit him hard enough and he would think I was weak... yes, I'm that paranoid.

PS: While we're on the topic of eva, I just want to tell you that I just downloaded Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0, so yeah, be jealous of my awesomeness! I have yet to watch it but it looks so awesome!

It's just a retelling of the story with better animation though it does change the story somewhat and it will have a completely new ending. If you're interested I can send you the torrent so that you can download it.

I tried getting into that show but I couldn't get past the action/adventure stuff that's not really my thing. The psycho-analysis clips were interesting though. So does anyone know any novels or movies with AvPD characters? It's probably a long shot since it takes such a specific cultural phenomenon for us to be recognized in.

I think I posted in a different thread that the only character in a book I've noticed with possible AvPD is Robert Cohn in Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. He's an outsider kind of clinging on to a group of expatriates, and he's shy and has a low self esteem. (One night in Spain they're all drunk and another guy starts telling him how pathetic he is and how no one likes him...that turned out to be scarily parallel to something that happened to me one drunken night in Paris, like a month after I read that book.)

Yeah I tried watching the first episode on youtube...I'm sure it's a great show (not trying to be snarky, I really do) but I think I must have movie ADD or something because whenever I watch a movie or show and it starts to focus on action type sequences I can't help but space out.

So, anyway, were you able to download and watch Rebuild of Evangelion? I already watched it and even though I thought the pace was bad at first it got better after the second half of the movie. Still, it's a good movie, worth watching.

Do you still haven't been able to play it? Because I could play it just fine. I played it with a program called VLC media player.
Here's a link to from which you can download that program: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Maybe that'll get it to work.
