Sports and Recreation

Postby OneSattva » Fri Oct 12, 2012 11:18 am

I notice that a lot of the forum users on here don't really do too much in the way of sports. I can understand and even relate to this. I don't enjoy doing anything such team sports or anything that requires any amount of rules or point scoring.

Does anyone else here think the same way? What is it that you do ( not necessarily even for enjoyment) and what is it that compels you to do your best?

I find that any freeform physical activity is something I like to excel in. I bike everywhere in the summer season, I usually ride cross country, and end up just riding until my legs can't pedal anymore. I do a lot of running as well, mostly on bare feet ( I actually find it a lot easier than in shoes) and do the same as with my biking. I camp as often as whatever job I have at the time permits me to do, and generally speaking am hardly ever off my feet. Living close to a national park, I hiking frequently as well. I find nature is a good place for contemplation without distraction.

Winter is usually more reserved though I do try to ski as as often as possible. I think of it as a good way mastering control of your body and improving reflexes. I still spend a lot of time walking around outside though, as the cold weather sends most people inside. I enjoy having an empty city to walk through and discover. :D

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but didn't care to search for and dig an old thread up over this. I imagine any martial art would be suitable for SPD, I personally have not tried any so I'm not too sure about that. I did try yoga a couple of times, and thought it was interesting but didn't continue with it. What are your thoughts on this?

I don't do any sports because I find them boring and repetitive. I might take up running if I had a treadmill and could watch a movie or anime at the same time or something, but that's about it- I just don't have the patience to do one boring thing over and over.

Also (and sorry if this is off topic), I hate professional sports and people who talk about them. I don't care if your college football team beat mine last weekend, people who gloat about winning a game that was played by someone else need to get a life.
You must understand, young Hobbit, it takes a long time to say anything in Old Entish. And we never say anything unless it is worth taking a long time to say.

I used to bike like 20 miles a day, and then I broke my bike. Before that, I used to do karate and kickboxing. I enjoy playing badminton and hockey, but they require you to play with someone. While my mom enjoys playing badminton with me, she's pretty awful so it's not really even worth bothering to try. I haven't done any physical activity (other than walking my dog) since I took gym in high school, 2 years ago

It seems like that for most things.

ditto. Back in high school, I tried the whole party scene. Most of the people in that group would spend hours talking about hockey players and football (american). I personally never understood the fascination they had with it.

Why didn't you fix it? Most things outside side of frame damage are quite simple to repair, needing mostly some time and the right parts.

Pretty much everything I've done could come under "individual athletic activities, extreme sport and martial arts".
That's meant sometimes doing stuff in situations where others will be there, but I'd tended to go for structured circumstances and never got to know people or involved with them outside of those activities.

I've never been much of a team sport person - too much standing around waiting for other people to do things I guess, and not always things which are interesting to watch.

I get not liking repetitive, but wow treadmill is as repetitive as you can get. I used to run outside to train for fitness but all I can really manage on one of those is a warmup before i work out, lol.

I don't hate professional sports, but I find a really hard time sustaining any interest the way others seem to - most people have role models in their sport at least, and some people seem to be obsessed with professional sportspeople in sports they don't even play.

I don't hate them or hate it, I just lack the motivation/interest. If I'm doing a sport, I'm more interested in what I'd doing at the time. Never had any role models as a child and its always been one thing that has set me apart from others in the sense it seems a large part of what they socialise around that I just haven't been able to develop an interest in.

I used to do more physical activities. I did biking a lot, skiing, tennis, basketball, martial arts.

If I were to restart, it would probably be martial arts. Having to interact with people bothers me though, but it would be in the domain of the acceptable. It is more the activities before and after that are a problem, not the activity itself.

When I was younger I played sports but I gave them all up about 3 years ago, now I just go for a walk everyday. I follow a good few different "professional" sports, but my interest in them has dwindled over the last while, although I'm a big football fan.

Seems like everyone here enjoys individual sports. I'm in the same boat. Tae Kwon Do was great fun until I had to leave for University, and since then I haven't had time... Working out physically is pretty relaxing, on a level, because it requires different types of concentration. Can't run to save my life, literally, but I can walk for eight hours without getting too tired.

People are a nightmare to play with. In Middle School, everyone constantly got mad at me in soccer because I apparently 'kicked too hard' and didn't play with the team. :?

I do a lot of running as well, mostly on bare feet ( I actually find it a lot easier than in shoes)

Barefoot is the best! I remove my shoes as soon as the sidewalks are dry and even go to school barefoot. Haven't gotten told off even once yet. :D People are so unobservant.

People who get paid more money than I'll ever see in a lifetime for playing a game need to get a life. Like, congratulations, you can throw a ball. Here's a salary you don't deserve for doing something a talented kid working minimum wage in Brazil can do with his eyes closed.

Too lazy. Broke it like 4 years ago by falling and the handbrakes don't work now. The really funny thing is I was biking to my friend's house and I had to pass a bike shop to get there. I crashed it like across the street from there. Of course, at the time I had glass in my leg and that was the least of my concern. I don't really need a bike anymore, since I have a car now. I mostly only biked because my friends lived at least 8 miles away. I'm indifferent about losing most things, and having to go out of my way to ensure I can do it again doesn't seem like something I would do.

I personally refuse to buy a vehicle, too many obligations. Car insurance, licensing, responsibility, and maintenance. Means you need more money, more money means more work, which I don't care for. I generally use public transportation if I need to go somewhere if it's too cold or far. I live a very minimalist lifestyle, so only the necessary and a few hobbies are all I really have. It enables me to work less, save more and then spend more time off living on savings.
