I'm very similar to you, I truly dislike point scoring partly because it doesn't reflect my own growth and partly because I hate competing against other people, I don't care about winning in 60 minutes because my entire life is the game and I'm never on the bench.

If I love anything in my life it's martials arts, dancing, tricking and parkour and whenever I can afford it (I live in Australia where there's no snow nearby) I go snowboarding. I can be the master of me in these things, I am in complete control, if I stuff something up I have only me to answer to (and I'm strict with myself  ). I could make a really long post detailing everything magnificent in movement arts, but I'd digress.

I ran track in high school and used to jog 2-5 miles a day, when I was younger, like ages 12-14, I played a lot of street basketball and football with whoever else happened to be at the park, I also enjoyed walking anywhere just for the f*ck of it, I'd take the bus around the city, the train and just see where the public transit could take me, but it was back when I had no pressures to do anything else so all of my time was recreation-time.

Now the only activity I do is structured, planned workouts. Like 1-2 hrs of cardio/weight training everyday, sometimes 2-3 hours. I've been told once or twice that's a bit on the obsessive side though..
But that's only when I'm working and can pay the monthly gym fee.

I personally don't like martial arts very much. There's a lot more interaction and groupwork involved in martial arts than one might think going in. I like team sports, but mostly because I'm interested in stats and trends and am interested in the strategy involved. I exercise some, but generally I enjoy mental recreation more than physical recreation.

Well the point of treadmilling isn't that it is less boring or repetitive than other exercise, but that you can do something else more interesting or useful at the same time so the time isn't wasted.

I would also consider taking up some sort of martial art, except I don't really feel like paying for classes or anything. Not to mention that it's mostly little kids in the classes, which I would think would make being in classes with them kind of weird.

Archery, most solitary sport I know. I'd practice two/ three hours a day. It was like meditation when I could really get into it. I could go on auto-pilot for hours. (And it was shooting things without the bang of guns.)

I like being fit. I like running, skiing, cycling. Team sports - very rarely. And I dislike competition very much.

Does anyone else here think the same way? What is it that you do ( not necessarily even for enjoyment) and what is it that compels you to do your best?

4 years ago i discovered road cycling. it's healthy, done outdoors, there's speed, music (for safety concerns i only use 1 headphone), the constant statistical side of your performance (speedometer), easy access to water, etc. i also like the cyclist identity: you get to wear all those clothes, sun glasses, cyclists shoes, gloves, helmet, etc. i'm not bothered about the silly tan lines either, i take them as proof of my commitment

in the winter & chillier times there's strength training (not a fan of it, though) & stretching. what i struggle w/ to this day is consistency, & that obviously has a lot to do w/ my general lack of drive. i'm not an ambitious exerciser, the enjoyment is the basic value of it

when i was young, i used to play football; i used to go in football training for 3 years. the social side wasn't a problem for me back then (it would be now). so, i've never been a stranger to sports

as to watching sport, i'm not interested in cycling. the obvious problem w/ endurance sports is that they look rather boring; but i'm interested in football & snooker (i happen to be a supporter of german football, so the world cup in brazil was very enjoyable)

i realize that sport could be easily viewed as another pointless enterprise: there are the odd rules & peculiar specifics of the sport, the usually lame commercialism & profit-driven mentality, wasting your precious life on sth w/o any intellectual significance, getting emotional & aroused over nothing, etc. but the health benefit aspect of this cannot be denied, also if you like the pysical sensation of working out & the witnessing of your own development & improvement, why not. if it makes you happier, go for it; & that's why i'm doing it. i'm trying to benefit from sports & avoid getting ridiculously involved
