voices or the devil?

Postby Frokly » Thu Oct 18, 2012 9:12 am

is it normal for a psychiatrist to tell you that the "the voices could be the devil and that you should pray"

i've had this same comment from my current and previous psychiatrist while my first psychiatrist didn't last long enough... for him to give me some weird religious take on psychiatry
i was bi-winning too... until my pdoc increase my meds... then i was bi-polar

nobody wants to believe they are insane, everybody wants to believe they are special... so i am normal... which makes me insane

My feeling is that what he said was out of line, especially if that was his only or primary solution. It appears you are not religious by the way you framed your question. If you were a believer and praying helped you better cope with your illness, then I wouldn’t have such a problem with it. It may be a cultural or personal bias of the psychiatrist in question.
I am not on the forum much these days. Please contact another staff member. Thank you.

its funny, i'm not religious... but i still find it strange that two psychiatrist says that... my current one is a professor the other one was an ex-professor

it's definitely seems to be a cultural bias... which by some means religion and the science are intertwined even in tertiary education in my country...

its even strange that he's a professor...

for me on a personal note... i can't put religion and the sciences together... but i know a ton of people who largely think the two are inseparable... besides the other extreme end where science is an illness...
something bound to fade away... while religious text prevails the test of time

but i keep on cracking my head... trying to figure out the relation between religion and psychiatry besides of course the healing from spirituality... besides that i have no idea... hence the question to know whether like you said this cultural bias is normal...

it'd be interesting to know about other peoples experiences with psychiatry like me and whether people have come across similar situation or its only in developing and eastern countries..
i was bi-winning too... until my pdoc increase my meds... then i was bi-polar

No I don't think that that was the appropriate thing for a psychiatrist to tell you. Are you seeing a psychiatrist whose practice is within a christian mental health institution? This place where I live is one of the main facilities, it is called Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services.

That's just mental health "professionals" in general. It's in their job description. Make sure you're not a danger to yourself or others and say the most off the wall crap to phuck up your day.

It is not normal for a psychiatrist to tell you that.

I'm convinced that my voices are from the devil, and they use that as further evidence that I am a schizophrenic. "Hearing from God or the Devil or whatever other deity" is one of their textbook definitions that they often use to diagnose.

Personally I believe my voices are from the devil for sure, which leads me to believe that other people's are as well. I wish wish wish a psychiatrist would believe me for once when I tell them that! :)

In any event, it is not a bad idea to pray! Even if you're not religious, what harm could it do?

Also, what kinds of things do the voices say?

Flak that's actually a very interesting question, i have no firm belief that the voices are from the devil... i just think i'm telepathic and that i'm communicating to other people in the world... i mean on earth..

we can have decent conversations and i was talking to some other celebrity just now and it was all awkward and stuff... because when i was talking to her i was convinced i was crazy... i was sleeping and i told her i was itchy all over... then she called me "boring"... then i started getting deluded that maybe i'm not crazy... and that i am telepathic...

but that's how things are nowadays... last time i had all sorts of horrifying encounters... i was talking to the devil... talking to aliens talking to gods... and they all tried to kill me... and those kind of stuff persay...

though honestly now i don't consider myself to be psychotic... i'm very happy that i'm functional... and very grateful that i can go about life like a normal individual... its just that i was curious to other peoples experience...

so don't take this wrongly as whining and complaining though :D
i was bi-winning too... until my pdoc increase my meds... then i was bi-polar
