Would Zyprexa work where others have failed?

Postby AnonymouslyMe » Tue Dec 23, 2008 7:41 pm

I´ve taken my fair share of sleep aids, mostly anti psychotics.

Tercian
Nozinan
Risperdal
Seroquel
etc

And i still wake up every 2-3 hours or so. id sure like to go through a night without waking up all the time. It gets worst when I have to get up, i´s so tired i keep waking up every 15min or so trying to get out of bed but i´m just so tired I don´t give a damn about anything anymore.

I saw that zyprexa has a longer half lfe than seroquel (still taking it) and I wanted to know what your experiences have been with it.

My pdoc is relunctant in giving it to me for a few reasons:
a) he says i´m very medicated already
b) he says he has had better results with seroquel in putting ppl to sleep
and c) He says I would gain too much weight, and I´m already heavy.

But I was thinking that a small dose of zyprexa together with the 600mg of seroquel would do a better job than just the seroquel.

Any ideas on it? thanks.

Hi,

I think that you should give your current medication more time. Some drugs can be slow to act in the body and you just have to sit-tight and be patient with them. All you can do is report back your symptoms to your doctor and let him/her make the decisions. It doesn't help the doctor when their patient begins to self-medicate.

you certainly don't want to be over-medicated. i've been on zyprexa and i'm currently on seroquel. seroquel has worked great for me but i have gained ten pounds. i'm small so it's not a big deal i'm just hoping i'll hit a plateau and stop gaining. i'm on a diet and exercise every day. the med just makes me hungry mostly at night when i take my big dose. in the beginning, i binged a lot but that's stopped now that i can see the damage. i'm having trouble fitting into my clothes. blah. of course, it's not that way for everyone. i have a bipolar 1 friend who is on seroquel and has never gained weight. so don't be too alarmed. you can always discontinue it.

i've been on zyprexa and it didn't do a damn thing. it didn't help my moods and it didn't help my sleep at all. it's not one of the most sedating antipsychotics i've read. maybe instead of adding zyprexa, up your dose of seroquel. whatever you do, talk to your doctor about it thoroughly first. i'm sure they'll have a plan for you to try that's safe. but tell him/her that you'd like to try a little zyprexa, just to see what happens. you'll get an answer.

good luck!

Thanks for thew replies guys.

I haven´t self medicated as those medecines need prescription. I did try zyprexa in 1998 but was during the day.

I´ll ask my doctor once again about zyprexa :)

Hey,

When I said 'self-medicate', I meant for you not to be giving yourself different doses of the drugs. Good luck anyway - I hope that your doctor gives you words of wisdom!

Oh, and did your doctor say that you could do this? I have little knowledge of the medication that you are taking but you must be aware that constantly changing doses can be damaging to your overall health. It can 'confuse' the body and mess-up metabolic pathways. Just - ummm - be careful!

I was put on Zyprexa, after trying out Risperdal and Abilify and couldn't stand them, but after taking it for 4 and a half months, it had no effect on my condition.

The only effect it had was adding some kilo's to my skinny body which was a good thing for me because I can't naturally gain weight due to my body burning everything very fast. After I stopped it, I returned to my previous skinny state :/

I tried it. The doc had me on trazadone for chronic insomnia, until I built up a tolerance and was taking 300mg a night. Zyprexa did absolutly nothing for me, sleep wise.

Yeah, i´m very honest with my doctors. both of them are concerned about the stress it puts on the heart, the liver and kidneys.

I had my stomach pumped on one occasion a litle over a month ago, because i went too far... the pain was just too great.

I know I shouldn´t do it but it´s too much pain and i can´t help myself.

I´m currently on:
seroquel (quetepine) 600mg
Abilify (arepripazol) 30mg
Mirtazapine 45mg
Vanlafaxine (effexor XR) 225mg
Oxcarbazepine (proaxen) 1200mg
Lyrica (pregabalin) 50mg and rising, probably till 150-600mg
Diazepam 5mg at night and arround 30mg in SOS

I normaly "cheat" with the seroquel and diazepam. I´ve taken 100mg diazepam and 2400 seroquel. I know it´s stupid but i couldn´t stop till i was out of it.
