Not forever. They can be brought back if you can find them or if they find you. They don't die like a human would die, but yes Alters can sleep, be locked up or even die. This one has been dead for over 30 years and has to learn the new rules. We are educating her before we let her come back to life and be among the others.

She wanted to abuse my then young son, so the host at that time (have not asked who it was. I have had over 20 hosts) "killed" her somehow (have not asked how yet either) instead of letting her abuse.

My posts just keep sounding cornier and cornier, but it's real.

I love how you asked question after question after question until you got some answers. My conversations with my gatekeeper are often like that. He's not being evasive, he just doesn't know what I'm looking for and maybe neither do I until I find it. I take it some of them just won't respond to "so, tell me all about yourself, go."

Shortly after Dan, who held intense anger, came at age 9, he did a couple bad things. Jonathan, worried, urged Jack to do something about it. So Jack jumped him (inside) and strangled him to death. Jack then developed amnesia for that, or he would have felt guilty. Next year Jack went inside for unrelated reasons.

Dan seems to have 'revived' several years ago during therapy. Over those years, he seems to have aged about six years, even though he was still dead (or considered himself so). The Sphinx told me about his existence and I began to call for him, against everyone's warnings, but he just showed up dying, then died. This happened several times.

A few months ago, he overheard Sphinx refer to him as "the one who believes he's dead." This led both Dan and I to realize he wasn't permanently dead, which I had suspected was possible based on readings, and within days I began hearing his voice inside. Then I invited him into the body so we could get a feel for who he is. He is filled with anger but he is very strong.

Whatever anger he had in him that drove him to try bad things was long ago. He's a very tough guy but not to the point of violence or doing bad things. Put a child in front of him, however, and he turns into a marshmallow. Jack on the other hand was in hibernation from age 10 until last year, so he was actually more asleep than Dan, at least during recent years, and is thus younger.

This is exactly how it happened internally, but it would never be my first DID story to tell to a friend.

I am curious! I still don't know what part in my system would be the same as your gatekeeper. Do you know? I hear the term gatekeeper used often, even by E. Howell, but I don't know. I am thinking it's like my Level 25 System Managers. These parts do as their name suggest - Manage the System, but Rachel for instance manages System Protectors like the Gorilla. She is in charge of System protection. Would she be called a Gatekeeper?

I was having a really hard time at one point. I wasn’t sleeping and I was very suicidal. Then someone told me to ask them to leave me alone for awhile. I did and it worked. The result was that I got some rest but then I began to feel alone for the first time in my life and I didn’t like it. I thought if I could ask them to go maybe I could ask them to come back - and they did. I’m not saying this will work for everyone but I was on my way out. I really needed them to go but just for awhile.

I don’t believe ‘they’ die, ever. I’ve worked on integration and I can go for long periods of time feeling like I’m coping just fine. I play ‘them’ down a lot these days but they are there always in the background ready to help me out of stressful situations.

Levels of Consciousness
Spira and Yalom (1996) describe... pg 138-141 Levels of Consciousness which explains why an alter may not answer when you call, even though you know that one exists. As is asked: "How can one conceptualize the activities of alters not in contact with the conscious mind?"

There are 3 levels of experience.
1. Dead (but able to come back to life). No other alter knows where it is.
2. Awake - it can be out or not out. Awake and out would be what the host is most of the time. It is awake and not out but it can still influence the part that is out but if it is not out it does not have "primary control" of the body.
3. Sleeping - "There is no direct contact with the external world." Time passes without knowing while asleep.

*Trigger warnings for alter death, apparently*

Alaizabel died. Literally. The Control Group got angry with her, and they basically t*rtured her in the headspace. Then, when she was weakended, they made her shatter. So we had Alice, who still had Alaizabel's bitchiness, but didn't spill secrets or act against the CG anymore. And a few months later, we found Mad Hatter, the part of the split who took Alaizabel's disobedience.

So, you can actually get rid of an alter. But... yeah. You can't just wave a magic wand and get rid of someone's traits.

I'm pretty certain I have one. I got a forceful image in my head of him. He is in a coffin, buried on a hill somewhere in my inner world. Hard to describe, but it is very vivid. My minds eye gets pulled to him and I see him shake as if he is waking up and is stirring and wants out. Its a sound like ruffling leaves and the way it would sound if one were knocking against a buried coffin.

I'm still very much in the discovering and learning phase. I don't know anything else about him. I have a feeling he was formed when I almost was strangled to death.
