Just because you know that doesn't mean your brain knows it. If you don't have the memories, there's still a chance the brain doesn't realize one of those memories is actually a memory. Since the ending isn't processed, the brain doesn't know there is an ending. It thinks it's still happening. That's what causes the PTSD.
