Huh. Una that's very interesting. I never considered trying to kick them out. I'm pretty sure I know whose voice it is belittling and demeaning me. I have always gotten the sense they are not an alter either. I was always confused about this and thought maybe they were a fragment. So then what's the difference between an introject that is an ego state and an abusive, persecutor alter?

There are two issues here: ego state vs alter, and introject vs protector (albeit extreme). Bottom line seems to be if it is has no positive value to you it should be gotten rid of, whatever it is. Many protectors (ego states and alters alike) persecute you, but once you talk to them you find out they are on your side, in their own twisted way. Arguably my mother did mean well, so perhaps the introject could have become something more positive.

In his book The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment, Eckhart Tolle describes how he abruptly cast off an apparent introject, a vicious Inner Critic. Voila, instant enlightenment. His book has literally changed the lives of many people but for me when I read it a few months ago my main thought was Been There Done That. It did nothing for me.

It could've been you who wrote that book! ;)

Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) could be useful in dealing with these problems.

Hardly. My introject was a small thing compared to his. When Eckhart Tolle tossed out his introject, the sense of relief and decompression caused him to spend the next two years sitting on a park bench, in a state of ecstasy.

Wow, two years huh? That's pretty amazing.

After some communication with these parts, I do think they are alters (versus ego states) and when I asked them if they have my best interests at heart, the response was, "of course we do." So that answers that question. Now it's just a matter of turning it around so they can help support me rather than working against me. Not quite sure how to go about doing this but I'm sure I'll figure it out as I go.
