referring to self as 'we'

Postby borderchild » Fri Jul 01, 2005 11:31 pm

I stumbled upon this message board and noticed that a lot of the members refer to themselves as 'we' and 'us'. I understand what you mean, but wanted to ask if someone would do that without having DID. I do that very often, but push myself to say 'I' when I don't want to be questioned. Usually, the 'we' just comes out....but sometimes 'we' and 'I' in the same sentence. I'm sorry if this is stupid. I just wondered what it meant.

Thanks.

ermm.... not sure..... try asking someone who doesn't have DID?? (any here.... raise your hands) :D

Can't imagine why or for what reasons someone would refer to themselves in the plural, unless they felt plural. Or unless they are royalty :) (the royal 'We')

*shrug*

Could be depersonalization. A dissocaitive disorder that is not D.I.D. Not sure tho. Try checking with The Sidran Insitute online. If you can't find the topic on their site try e-mailing the question to them. They are good about respoding. Some times it may take a few days.

Thanks. What a wonderful website with so much information. I have contacted them with my question.

I have been diagnosed with BPD, depression, anxiety, and OCD, among other things. Dissociation, mainly depersonalization and derealization have been symptoms that I've always struggled with. Strange things have been happening lately, which brought me to this question about using 'we'.

referring to self as we

Postby Alecia » Sat Jul 09, 2005 6:46 am

This is so strange! I was just doing a search on the web for the same question and ran across this discussion. I don't know if I have any disorders as I've never been to a therapist or been diagnosed. But, I have recently been wondering why I often refer to myself as "we". It only seems to happen when I'm talking to myself when I'm alone as I go about my daily chores, etc. I'm pretty sure I don't have multiple personality disorder as I'm not thinking that I'm really talking to another person or that another person is present. I'm really not sure! Anyone have any experience with this?

In reference to "we"

Postby mermaidmo » Mon Jul 11, 2005 1:57 am

From my experience, I have known several people who will use "we" when speaking. They do not have DID.

Ironically, I am very careful never to use "we" in conversation, except with my T. I have read that other with DID are also careful not to use "we" in conversation.

I have read that when a person with DID starts to use "we" that they are probably recognizing DID more and that there are alters.

For what it's worth...

I only use 'we' when I'm in a 'we' sort of mood. I don't know if that makes any sense, whatsoever...
I only use it when speaking to myself, though. I'm usually careful not to let it slip in converstions to others.

i don't realize i say "we" until someone asks me, "who is we?" then i have to explain somehow, someway. but i find it a lot in my journal writings.
