I'm guessing what she experiences is a different disorder.

Just general questions, but do these episodes seem convenient every time? Are there any apparently reasoned patterns?

When does she mention it? On her own, or while being confronted about something?

They do and that disturbs me.

She doesn't mention it normally.

Does she seem to bounce between opposites? Or get really super happy at times, or act really irresponsibly?

It could be something like bi-polar with her justifying it by dissociation. That actually isn't uncommon I don't think.

I'm in no way saying that is what it is. Just a possibility.

How does she act when she says she is dissociating? You mentioned she gets aggressive, and seems to lose touch with reality. Does she also seem more energetic? More irritable? Does she do irresponsible things, like go on crazy shopping sprees, or do anything else entirely uncharacteristic?

I'm just mentioning this because it came to me that she feels 'flat' or emotionless 'normally'. These behaviors do kind of fit with bipolar type disorders (which can include depersonalization) But also because it reminds me of a cousin of mine, now that I think of it, who has bipolar. The similarity is definitely there.

Just an idea, I could be entirely wrong.

Those who have seen her do this and were concerned about her have simply said her face expression changes entirely or she bursts into laughter which isn't related to anything actually occurring. She seems to get aggressive when forced to face situations (ie someone asks her to pay attention) or if others draw attention to her expressions. She's been described as being fairly irresponsible ie not taking care of money and possessions and has been in a few issues with the law over public intoxication charges.

Do you think what she is doing is depersonalization in some sense?

It isn't necessarily depersonalization. It could be, or not. Only really she can know because it is defined by perspective.

It could still very well be bipolar, though. Some times the symptoms just get played down as bad or unusual behavior (well they are that I guess but there is a reason behind it) and people tend to overlook it, quite often. Getting in trouble with the law over possession, intoxication, or substance abuse is not really uncommon in those with bipolar.

And that isn't to say she has it (I know I keep making disclaimers.. :D ) just that it could be taken into consideration while trying to figure out what is going on.

I'm trying to think...this one is kind of tough. I dissociate when I'm extremely depressed and that's when I end up self-injuring. When I get extremely anxious, I also dissociate. I think it's probably not the most positive thing for me, but it does cause me to avoid emotions for a period of time.
