Going Mad

Postby theemoteddy » Sun Oct 26, 2008 8:11 pm

I am a teenager of age 14 and i am just wondering if it would be possible to have DID at such a young age.? I have had a really Rough childhood and i have been diagnosed with Dependent personality disorder but i am to scared to ask my psycologist about DID.
I am more and more often having these times when my friends ask me why i have said and done things when i have no record of doing or saying them at all. I sometime have this voice thats like a friend to me in my head but sometimes he can be mean and i don't even know if it is more then one.

Please just help me with some replys...I am just so confused

Hi theemoteddy,

It is possible to have DID at 14 years of age. People are born with DID - It is a genetic disorder. Do not be scared to talk about this with your doctor. He/she will understand.

I have never heard of people being born with DID, but I do know that it's developed during periods of extensive abuse and/or trauma to defend oneself. Most such abuse occurs during childhood, so having DID by age 14 isn't unusual in most cases. Being aware of it at that age might be unusual... I don't know... but it certainly doesn't exclude the possibility of a DID diagnosis.

Don't diagnose yourself, though. Talk to your shrink about the voice, and see how it goes. Best of luck!!

That sounds a LOT like me right before I was diagnosed (way back in 1996!). My friends were telling me that I was doing and saying things that I didn't do. I also had that "friend in my head" and we didn't always get along. Still don't.

I've never heard of being born with DID either because it's caused by trauma and/or abuse. It's not genetic. But for me, my first alter developed when I was 2-years-old. So a 14-year-old can most definitely have it.

thank you all for replynig. It is just so wierd because at this stage i don't know how many or how old or even name or gender. But the thing that bugs me is that i really don't know if it is there or if i am just lying to myself because it wouldn't be the first time i have succeded in doing that. Is it really bad to want to have DID? Could you really enjoy having it?

I really don't have that many friends and maybe these "people" were created by me so growing up i would have someone to talk to. I never really had someone to talk to so i guess it wouldn't be that bad.

Thanks again.

Just need to point this out..

DID is not a genetic disorder at all.
While it is true that some people are more naturally predisposed to developing DID (e.g. people who are characteristically highly intelligent and creative), it is not something you are born with.

It is just something that some people are more susceptible to developing than others.

It is mainly brought on by a traumatic event, or repeated traumatic events. Where some kids would fight, or get over it 'normally', some kids detach from themselves to survive instead.

Annnyyyywaayyyy.....

Hi EmoTeddy :)

Don't jump to conclusions, and don't feel afraid to ask anything. Sounds like you need some time to figure yourself/ves out. Don't push anything, take your time.

I survived for years and years before a.) realising I had it and b.) attempting to tell anyone about it. I had known about my multitudes of what I thought were my invented 'characters' since age 4! I was actually more comfortable by myselves than with other people. It's quite a comfy feeling.
I'd say try a professional route, but ONLY WHEN YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH IT!

Take care.

Chucky,
This bit of "information"

It is possible to have DID at 14 years of age. People are born with DID - It is a genetic disorder. Do not be scared to talk about this with your doctor. He/she will understand.

is quite untrue and perpetuates stereotypes, and could cause quite a bit of chaos if you aren't careful, please get your facts straight.

It is possible to have DID at a very early age and generally happens very early in childhood due to severe abuse. Unless you are traumatized in the womb, you are NOT born with it, and IT IS CERTAINLY NOT a genetic disorder.

Most doctors wont understand and it is only rarely that one will even agree to help you let alone understand.

Please be careful when seeking help, do a lot of research, and don't believe everything you hear, read, or see.

Hi,

I truly apologise, and I accept your point. The sentence of 'people are born with it' was wrong and misleading of me. What I meant was that people are born to be susceptible to it. So, whereas some people could tolerate a form of abuse in their youth, another person might not (due to their gentic predisposition) and may go on to develop DID. I made a swift reply and I apologise for that.

Take care,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
Sorry for jumping on you like that, I just get scared when people get things mixed up with DID. Thanks for setting it straight...

No problem my dear. Sure, it was my fault for not explaining correctly in the beginning. I'm just a regular dude, despite my 9,000+ posts. I'll admit that I have little experience with DID, but I do know a chap in real life who has it.
