About our hobbies

Postby sleepingwolf » Thu Aug 23, 2018 8:16 pm

I wanted to write a post about how difficult and strange hobbies can be for us. We're only just figuring this out so I thought I'd write about it.

I feel we're lucky in that we do share a lot of common interests, but I'm seeing there are lots of different levels.

For example - Star Wars

A few of the littles love it - for now, how it is now, just as a fun thing

Older Alters also love it, in different ways:
Melden - A classic love, a nostalgic love, as she loves all things Sci-fi
Gothika - A playful, but kind of light love, liking the art of it mostly
Yanni - A love of the ideas, or the style of it
Sky - In a homely way, mainly for the littles

So when we come to watch a movie, or read a graphic novel (or buy/rent one), then sometimes it just doesn't fit! I'm only really figuring this out...and it's starting to make a LOT of sense now...throughout our life, of many things just not quite fitting.

There are a few things out there that we all like. At the moment we have a Star Wars graphic novel that ticks everyones box...and its super great! But sometimes, yes, its Star Wars, but its only Melden's, or for the Littles...and so on.

And of course...the Littles want a R2 teddy, Melden an old Poster, Yanni an artwork...and so on...

Well, thats it for now.

I'm going away to try and make some kind of hobby chart...or something like that. :D

We have a similar thing, across many areas! I'd love to hear updates about how your hobbies chart works out ...for right now, we just have a page in our communications sketchbook for everyone to note what they like (putting their name next to stuff that's already been listed, with invitation to add new things) so we can better understand everyone's interests. A chart sounds much more organized!

hii, I relate to this so much.

for me the thing we all kind of love, but in different ways, is formula 1. It's such a weird experience for me to watch it, because I have all these people in my head cheering for different drivers and then one part who just thinks everyone is very attractive. It's really funny to listen to usually since everything is so positive and happy, and that often results in me laughing out loud and my parents thinking I'm crazy.

the other differences in hobbies are kind of weird, since they kind of also go hand in hand with how well I'm able to do something. So for example I really love painting, but then sometimes I'm really good at it, and then a moment later I will have a completely different art style, or I'll have no idea how to even hold a paintbrush. The same goes for making music I guess. I can also see a clear difference in interests and things like that when I'm watching a movie or something, because I'll suddenly lose all interest in it.

I'm not really at the point yet where I have enough communication to know who is who and who likes what, but I'm sure it'll be very interesting for you to make an overview and find out more. So good luck.

Thanks for the message guys, its great to hear your stories and that you relate. I laughed out loud reading them (in relating to them all) :D :D :D

I'll make sure to post about how it all goes on. I'm only recently at a stage of us all working out who likes what, and who is saying and doing what. I guess you have to get used to asking the question, 'ok, who am I right now?' otherwise for us likes and interests can kind of melt into one another and that ends up with no one satisfied!

I so relate to laughing out loud for no reason, for something another alter or alters have said. It's literally impossible to explain to anyone... :D :D :D

As we've met our alters and those of our adopted son, we've logged information about each. One of the most important categories has been "Likes" -- things they're interested in or like to do. Not exactly hobbies but close.

These have been wonderful things to keep track of. They help us recall something distinctive about a specific alter that is neutral or positive, rather than more upsetting stuff like the trauma that caused them to be here, which we also keep track of when we know it. Also, keeping the details help us fulfill the wishes of some littles, like for somebody who loves red wagons (Radio Flyer type) or certain types of bubble gum. Or if we start getting images of Dr Seuss, we have a good idea who's nearby. Incidentally, my son and I visited the Dr Seuss Museum last week, a joy for almost any little (or adult!)

I related to that a lot. It would explain why my Netflix-Account lists a lot of shows which I stopped to watch midway and I can not remember why I started to watch that at all. And vice versa I sometimes wonder why I ever stopped to watch a really god show which I actually love some months ago,...

My small room is also full of stuff for different hobbies. I have a lot of art-stuff (Paper, paint, sculpting material). Instruments and expensive music software, a small workshop for electro-tech-tinkering, extensive P&P-Roleplay-Library, needlecraft-materials,Game-Collection etc. And most of the time I wonder why I have all these things, because I can not relate to that much and even wonder why and when I did buy this things.
But I know, that parts of me love and also need their corner and their hobbies. And since I started to realize that I am actually more than one it seems even more important to me, to give everyone the possibility to express themselves and have something to do which they love.
