Great post Una!

Read more threads here; there are lots of threads by SOs about being or wanting to be with someone who has DID, and still more from the perspective of someone with DID who has internal conflict over who to be with. In the end the DID doesn't really matter; what matters is does the person as a whole treat you with care and respect? Are you happy? Are you safe?

Good luck.

My true love has DID. Within her, I have a lover, a child, a protector, a best friend, and a confidant. I love them all.

Friend of someone with DID.
Sweetie you did nothing wrong in merely asking her about her DID. The complications lie in that it isn't something we want to or can talk about when it is simply convenient for someone else. Here is an example: Whenever I use to enter a new relationships or just friendships, I tell the other person right out of the gate so that there is honesty and openness from the start. As no one wants to be rejected or have hurt feelings. On that note, your friend probably felt defensive and protective of her mental illness. There are so many factors that could be playing out here. I am so sorry you had that experience but if she really means something to you, you should proceed with the knowledge that it might just be a hands-off topic for her right now.
Good Luck and thanks for your observations. I helps those of us with DID to see how others perceive us.
