Mine are closely tied to emotions- they don't even really have names (though I think one called herself Karen once, or Kacey, or something like that?). I identify them by the way they act/emotion tied to them, such as 'the angry one' or 'the child'. Any visual representation either looks like me or a friend, which usually only appears if I am talking to them in the car or something, they'll 'sit' in the passenger seat, or via a daydream. Actually, some are animal-like I think, but i never 'see' them, just kinda know about that. Most of them are more like fragments- I think that's the term- than fully-formed alters.
