Need help identifying event

Postby Fracturedself » Thu Jan 02, 2014 12:28 am

I've been having horrible anxiety the last few weeks - the kind where you just lay with your head on firm ground because moving seems horrible.
One day I was feeling great so I went on a drive with a friend and found myself utterly confused at where we were. I kept thinking I was in another state - where I lived as a child - but I had to keep saying, "No, we are in XYZ. It's okay." I had a horrible time breathing and was tense. It lasted quite awhile, actually until the terrain changed from farmland to high desert.
What is this event called?!?!?! It's happened a few times lately, but not for this long - maybe 30 minutes. I want to research this but don't know what to call it.
Thanks!

When this happens for me, I'm pretty certain nowadays that something is getting triggered for someone. Something in my environment is a reminder of something bad from the past, something none of us can put our finger on, though we know it's something. Also, anxiety has been generally high leading up to the appearance or re-awakening of some alters.

It sounds to me like a flashback, mostly the emotional component of an event. Your wording suggested to me that something about the farmland was a trigger. We had a horrible thing happen on a farm, so it stood out. Farms themselves don't trigger us since they were common in our childhood. But almost anything, like a smell, a look someone gives me, or how sunlight hits a wall, can.

When I've had this sort of thing occur, it was considered a flashback. One nasty one in particular took three months to right myselves from. Horrible! But that was before I knew I had DID so I was really upset by the whole thing and did not understand it. These days, if this happens, I recognize what it is and find ways to ground myselves into the present day. I also try to record the event in writing as I am experiencing it or shortly thereafter for further evaluation. I have found that these kinds of flashbacks seem to be seared into my memory so recalling them even years later and recounting them to another person or in writing can be easily done.

Really!?!?!
My T just told me that flashbacks aren't like the movies - visual replays of events, but because of the way my systems works, it seems like that is often the case. This was a little different as I felt more disoriented than anything. but I've had flashbacks where is was pretty visually disturbing.
