Melatonin is a natural hormone and has been proven to be important in regulating circadian rhythms. I have never tried melatonin but I know that in preliminary studies melatonin has been shown to improve the total amount of sleep and decrease the time it takes to get to sleep in adults. Melatonin, however, has not yet been approved for medical use by the FDA since no definitive controlled studies have been done on it.

I took 3mg of melatonin per night for 6 years: 1996 to 2002. It worked wonderfully, but it stopped working entirely after the 6 years. I have tried it a few times since then, and it has no effect anymore. I know a lot of people for whom it did not work ever. It does not seem to have many bad side effects, so try it and see if it helps.

I have seen studies with doses up to 10mg with no significant side effects. The studies were done on cancer patients with insomnia problems. It helped them since cancer patients lose the proper regulation of melatonin for some reason.

Melatonin helped me for a while, and I never had cancer. What helps your insomnia depends on your problem. Unfortunately, you will just have to try various things to see what helps.

I've taken many medications. I was diagnosed with GERD at the age of six. I started taking Prevacid right away. I still take it today. I have had migraines since the age of 5, and was perscribed Maxalt at age 9. I get them horribly. The mix of migraines and reflux cause me to not produce enough melatonin. I took 4 chewable tablets (unsure of how much) at one time. I was staying up until 1 am at the age of 4. And I'd finally fall asleep. I now have been weaned off the melatonin, but only because i now take amatriptaline to prevent clustering migraines, which makes me tired. I still cannot fall asleep. I just go onto my iPod until I fall asleep. The soft glow, believe it or not, helps me fall asleep. Mind that, it's 12:30-something AM, and it feels like 5 PM to me.

Melatonine is known for relieving some of the symptoms of Insomnia, but it seems from the previous posts that it works only for a few... In my case, simply dealing with my emotional issues that stressed me out everyday was the solution. Now i get a solid 7-8 hours, but two years ago I was depressed and anxious all the time.

Here's a funny story..

I took melatonin 4mg daily for about a month. Stupidly I did not read up on how exactly to take it; I can be a little blase sometimes! I just took it with my vitamins in the morning at around 10am. I was at my in laws on a family visit overseas and by lunch time I would be passed out on their couch, despite having had my mornig coffee. It was kind of embarassing and I couldn't account for it, just thought I was very relaxed there. When bedtime would come I still had to take my sleeping pill (I am mentally not physically addicted I think) but I had cut it down by half. I would fall asleep very quickly and sleep right through for 8 or so hours.

Then one night as I was getting ready for bed I noticed my heart was racing. I couldn't explain it. I was feeling good, no stress or upset of any kind. It took a while to settle down but eventually it did and I went to sleep. The next night the same thing happened, but this time my heart was really racing. I woke my husband up cuz I was beginning to freak out. I googled my meds and vitamins I was taking and then thought about the melatonin.. that was the only new thing I was on. Everything else I had been on for years and "raccing pulse" didn't come up as a symptom for them. When I googled melatonin I found racing pulse was a possible side effect on one website.

My pulse did finally settle down but it was scary. I never took melatonin again. The lunch time naps ended and I didn't sleep quite as well as before.

I looked online and it seems like the consensus is that whether you take 1mg or 10mg you will get the same effect. I was also told that even .5mg should be enough. I really should try it again in a much smaller dose AND I should try taking it an hour or so before bed, not in the morning!
