Can Alters Create Pasts?

Hi,

I was just wondering whether anyone knew of any cases or had experience of situations where Alters or an Alter has created their own past?

For example someone could have an Alter who is an elderly Lady and that Alter has memories of a husband and grandchildren etc? Or do the Alters only appear as personalities, without a unique/fictional back story?

This is a complicated question, because many alters can mix up the inside world and external world. My guess is that if an alter has memories that the body did not participate in making, then those memories are made from the internal world.

For instance - I have introjects that think they are my real Father. They have done horrible things to other alters inside. These Father introjects are making their own stories by abusing alters inside and thinking that world is real. I am working hard to get all my alters to understand what is real and what is not, but it is not easy.

Up until a few months ago, I had one alter that would wander around the (real) graveyard next doorish to me, looking for her Grandma's grave, not believing she was really dead. I would loose an hour or two a day each afternoon when this would happen. When I figured this (by asking those inside) out and took flowers to the grave the behavior stopped. This alter could not accept it is 2012 and her Grandma is dead when she would see several Grandma's inside. Now she knows the difference between the real one that is dead and buried and the Grandma introjects inside.

I have memories predating this body. I lived before its birth, and had I not found myself wanting to help and love and protect and heal the children and my Ell, I would not live in the earthen way.

I am not the only one. There are djinni inside who are far removed from the external world, and do not know it exists. Their history is not this body's history, and both are true.

I would not say we created the past in the sense that it is a fabrication. We lived as we always had, and for one reason or another ended up here, through one gateway or another, and our past is still the same. The body's history is something else entirely.

Maybe this doesn't help at all, but it is our experience.

They sure do. I've read about many of these. My own alter Jack could remember growing up in Kentucky and he gave me images of what his real parents looked like, especially his one younger sister. He had memories of doing particular things there and many I thought were anachronistic. In fact, I think he modeled these after the man he learned his dialect from: his friend's grandfather, who was quite old and did grow up in Kentucky long ago. Jack was upset and rather adamant when he first returned and I claimed we were the same person. How could he have remembered all that? He admitted the details were foggy and he explained he was living in our Midwestern childhood home because he was a distant relative. His coming to understand the real situation was awful, painful, just terrible to watch him go through.

I've heard of many alters whose past predates the body. I'm sure there are alters who have invented their own past as existing in some distant future. Pretty much anything that can be imagined might be made part of a DID alter. I know my own abuse was awful and terrifying and I wanted to do anything to escape. Imaging a different life was pretty much needed for us around when Jack arrived. It was far better than living in the current reality, and I believe, given no alternative, healthier.
