Nicki Minaj and her "Alter" ego's

Postby Mycchole » Sat Aug 04, 2012 1:52 am

I usually post when I need information on something that I'm concerned about or is bothering me and it's usually very important. However, Nicki Minaj, is the topic I'm kind of agitated about. The reason being is that she's stated they are also alter-ego's that she's created but at a young age she say's in order to escape the trauma in her life she would become different characters.

Now as much as I can understand that, the problem with me is that she's beautifying this "Multiple Personality Bit" as if it's not really a real condition and can be made up by anyone. She makes it seem funny and interesting (its of course very interesting) but in actuality it's more complex and a little less fantastic as it seems. I was just wondering how my fellow multiples feel about her promoting herself as this "Multiple Personality B****". Maybe it's nothing for me to be agitated about, but when I tell certain people about my disorder they go right to Nicki Minaj and say "She ain't got nothing on you" which kind of offends me.

So questions: How do you feel about her promoting herself and making this disorder glamorous?
Should I truly be agitated about this?
And will someone tell me why I have an alter that like's her?

I've never heard of her, I'll have to go take a look really though.

I suppose off the cuff, I would say I have mixed feelings..on one hand I can see how glamorizing it can invalidate other's experience, then I can also see this may be her way of coping with it, also on another hand, I can see how it might help bring some awareness, and perhaps some backlash from those who are ignorant, or feel negative towards a crowd that might want to have a "cool disorder(?)" so I guess I'm a mixed bag. :D

but when I tell certain people about my disorder they go right to Nicki Minaj and say "She ain't got nothing on you" which kind of offends me.
I can see why it would be agitating, I got a similar thing, but in my field of work, or even in my field of study(my professors would laminate about the breakthrough person/token), a "token" broke through the general public's view on a subject/work, and everyone would compare me to him(or in regards to the professors, with the breakthrough artist). It caused a pigeonhole effect, where the general public accepted this genre, but only this genre. Eventually, the general public began to open up to more than one possibility but boy, can it be agitating in the meantime.

I didn't know she has alters. I assume there are a good few people in the field of entertainment who have dissociative features in their personality and who can use it creatively. I could even name a few but since they haven't announced it, I won't speculate any further :P.

When there's a celebrity who talks about her disorder, of course it will become fashionable and there will be followers who start playing that they have the same thing. There is a risk that someone who actually does have it gets labeled as one of the DID wannabes.

Assuming Minaj is going to get more publicity/money/respect by telling about her multiple personalities, it can feel a little unfair. Also if your friends hear about your disorder and start focusing on Minaj, it's certainly not what you want to hear in that situation.

Maybe your alter who likes her feels a connection with her.

I highly doubt she has DID , when she says "egos" , I think she is just using it metaphorically. The "alter ego" thing is in these days.

Either way , I find her repulsive.

@Borg
Yeah I totally understand what you're saying. It's just that, ugh, it's like....mmm. I want to be a entertainer and maybe one day that will put me in the spotlight for fame with my success. And as much as I would like to be a spokesperson for multiples, I just dont think I could become one because of the "backlash" that would follow. I mean you should look her up and get a feel for her. She's eccentric, mildly entertaining, reminds me of that cousin you don't like to be around in public. And we do have a cool disorder, I can't believe I said that :).

@Underice
I hope it's just a phase for one of my little ones, she cannot have her as an idol.

@coloroftruthisgray
Thank you!!! When I hear her name...I tend to want to...maybe regergitate my food!

And while on the subject of Nicki Minaj, I've been writing a book for some time that focuses on the supernatural and thee Illuminati have been a real interest to me. It's just really good material. However, this MK ultra they refer to as "Creating Multiples", really astounds me. The CIA have found a way to do this. If anyone knows anything about that i would love for you to explain how this happens.

We know of Nicki Minaj, but have never heard her work. We do recognize her as someone who has been known to say/do things for the sake of publicity, but since we haven't lived her life, we can't say whether or not she's truthful in her claim to have become others as a result of childhood trauma.

First of all, we'd rather err on the side of acceptance, since we know how it feels to be invalidated.

Secondly, multiples experience their selves in many different ways. For some, the word "characters" may come closest to what they experience, especially if they have done little or no healing work. And the word "characters" has two meanings: one, people in a work of fiction, and two, someone (real or fictitious) who acts in an unusual, odd, or humorous manner, as in, "He's a real character."

Thirdly, how many of us in the multiple community have shared things in our own lives that are funny and interesting? Probably most of us. The fact that someone who may be multiple and who knows that she has a platform to improve understanding of these issues doesn't mean that everything that she says about being multiple has to be negative or painful. Describing our experience as "shades of gray," we think, gives a fuller, less stereotypical understanding of the many nuances of our experience.
