Do you have DID-dar?

Postby Una+ » Tue Aug 16, 2011 6:24 pm

John (Johnny-Jack) and I were talking about our experiences detecting DID in others, and John coined a new word: DID-dar. Similar to gaydar, DID-dar is the ability to detect persons who have DID. My therapist, who has worked with many DID clients, says she detects DID everywhere she goes, and there are many published reports of aware DID clients detecting DID in others. She has not heard of anyone before me detecting it in others without knowing anything about it, but it makes sense that this is possible.

I detected two other persons with DID before I knew about my own DID. At first all I knew was (a) the first person's behavior was peculiar at times and (b) I had a powerful and peculiar (ego-alien) feeling that this person was somehow just like me. That was my Alter 1's intuition, communicated to me by means of an intense "made" feeling. I had no such feeling about the second person, but that person's behavior also was peculiar, in exactly the same way. Ergo, that person also has DID.

I don't know if I have DID-dar, but my husband and one of my best friends both seem to be highly dissociative (neither has been diagnosed, but T has long thought H's sexsomnia stuff has dissociative roots). I think there is something in the way they are, their experiences, that resonates with me deeply and instinctively. So, in that way, yes, I think there is a sort of perception there. I don't know if it's extraordinary, though. I think that instinctively seeking such resonances is probably natural.

First day of college last September, my friends had all left because I retook a year. So I had to find some new friends. Went into the refectory, saw a guy sitting alone and went over and talked to him. A month later, he went on antidepressants and discovered his DID. A week later I went on antidepressants which caused me to have my twitches and eventually (about 2 months ago) discover my alters. This is my DID friend Matt, who I am involved with.

I think someone in my head made my go talk to him, probably Sophie. Because I was wondering whether I should, and I eventually went, nah I can't just go up and talk to a random person, and then suddenly it was all like, the hell you can! And I walked over, and the rest, as they say, is history :D.

The two of us have also joked about such a radar. But we came up with the name mental detector, because the idea was that it went further than just DID (he's dx'd bipolar and I'm very likely bipolar). I also read somewhere (no idea where) that people with the same diagnosis tend to sit together in mental hospitals even though they don't know each others diagnosis. I find that fascinating.

Yes, definitely!

My old girlfriend is DID. She left hints about this, sure, but the hints were small and only we picked up on them, and a few of us had known even since the beginning.
We also have another friend who, while not DID, is very dissociative.

I think one of the odd human traits, in general, is being able to instantly find someone like yourself.

Definitely.

I already spotted it in one kid at work who pret-Don't soften it up. Out-right said that he has internal voices and some are sociopathic. His behavior fits DID. He goes "Blank" and just acts... different at different times. There's a social nice friendly him and a silent, groggy-acting, but [I can tell] hiding hyper-arousal, I think, him that I've noticed. It's weird in a subtle yet familiar way.

Also I know one girl from college who I know has it, but was the one who convinced me I was possessed.
She really seemed to know what she was talking about, and said that hers were prayed away or whatever. D: And I could tell we were the same. So argh. >.<;\

But yeah. I agree. Like attracts like. I relate best to and am most open with dissociative people because of that special brand of shittiness with which we can all relate.
I'd prefer to simply not worry about identities.

Scratch my first post.
My DID-dar is amazing. I know 15 other people with DID and they all live in my head.

Not me but I think my wife does. It's kind of on low power most of the time as it takes several interactions with someone for her to pick up on another DID. She's gotten around several others over the years but not for a very long period of time each. More often than not they have ended up knocking my wife for a loop followed by weeks/months of depression and hopelessness. Those types haven't had very stable systems. Things are starting to take a turn for the better and we're branching out a little more socially now. Isolation can be deadly. I'm ready for more interaction and ready to end our self-imposed isolation.

I think so. Three of my closest friends, if not THE three closest friends, have all had experiences of others. They each have their own interpretation of that. Anyway, I felt a strong connection and sameness with all three right after getting to know them a little.

Just found another who seems pretty dissociative yesterday.

She's awesome. :3 Even if she's 5 years younger than me.
@ Kazine: xD Holy freaking crap. That makes me laugh every time I've read it.

That is so annoying. If anything I think God increased her ability to dissociate to protect her from the pain that maybe she wasn't capable of acknowledging at the time. I am Christian and I honestly believe that a Christian isn't able to BE possessed, because of Christ. I have EXPERIENCED this wierd possession type thing before, though, and so I know that dissociative disorders are extremely real. NOT possession by demons.

Sorry, not trying to turn this into a religious debate, but in the Bible it was always pretty clear when someone was possessed with a demon. And I don't think my behavior when I got into those "possessed type" states is demonic-like at all. If anything, I was very polite and kind in one. Frightened but accepting of the help of others in the next one. And the next one...well I don't know if you call throwing socks demonic-like or not...
