Faking DID

Postby Hypo_tredec » Sat Mar 23, 2013 1:29 am

I've always kind of wanted to know, how could you tell if someone was faking DID? What might on get out of it? Any information is helpful, Thanks.

I don't really know how to tell if someone was faking... I suppose their identities wouldn't be very consistent either in their portrayal or what they've said or what they remember. This isn't fool-proof, of course so take that with a grain of salt. A faker may want an excuse to do certain things or maybe they want attention. Oh! Yeah, another way to maybe tell if someone's faking is if they make a huge deal about their identities... Like, they tell everyone at any chance they get or something. Again, please don't take that to mean this is accurate information....
I hope I'm not fueling denial here...

I've seen the question asked before. Can't find the thread I was looking for, but this seems to be a good one:
dissociative-identity/topic86429.html Can anyone fake DID? And how can you tell?
But denial is also very common. It can feel like one is faking it, but it's not faked. For example:
dissociative-identity/topic86429.html Done living this lie
Dx: PDD-NOS. Tested for dissociative disorders and PTSD but they say the symptoms are attributable to PDD-NOS.

I would like to thank both of you for answering, and hopefully soon, I can get some more answers. I'd like to be as sure as possible. The more information, the better.

Gently speaking, I am curious as to how this question came about?

One of my friends.
We do not like feeling mocked.
She claims to have another personality that takes over. That's not the source of my disbilief, though. She's very inconsistant. Her alter's voice seems to be different everytime she's out. It has inconsistant mannerisms. Her 'transistions' are never the same.
shes like defs making fun of us. thats not cool.
I personally don't mind it too much, but I never liked the feeling of someone pretending to have DID or anything like that just because I told them...

This thread might be interesting for you: dissociative-identity/topic103854.html?hilit=faking
(How often do you encounter 'fakers', online or otherwise? - it talks about fakers, how to spot if someone is one, what that means and how to deal with it etc) :)

Sorry you are experiencing this. Have you entertained the idea that s/he has more than one personality and that they are "hiding" by trying to masquerade as one alter? I'm not saying this is the most likely scenario, just thought I'd send it out there :)

Hope you figure this out, as it sounds distressing to some of you. Best of luck.

I don't think she is making fun of you. I think she just wants to feel closer to you or experience what you're experiencing because she doesn't understand the severity of the disorder. Or she might not be faking. Singletons don't always speak the exact same way. I know I can switch tones and pitches depending on my moods. If she is, though..I doubt it's making fun of you.

Very well. So perhaps (although I do highly doubt) she is not faking. Perhaps she really is multiple and so is her alter. I'm unsure however I feel, personally that she's making it up. Now this may just be my nature, however, it's how I feel. If she is faking it, I do readilly accept the possibility she is not making fun of us. It would make sense that she is just looking for an outlet to become closer to Abdel, and by extension, us. I'll try not to to let it get me too upset. However would asking her be completely out of the question?
