Comorbidities Poll

Postby BrokenAspie87 » Fri Nov 16, 2012 11:29 pm

So recently, I was learning more about handling being an Aspie Adult and I found a list of comorbid syndromes and disorders that some Aspies have. I mean, being an aspie is a different enough experience without having anything else to worry about. So I was thinking maybe we could create some sub-threads or something to deal with the differences between aspies. That is, if this generates enough interest. I also have NLD and was surprised to find it on the list!

Schizoid PD, (OCD?), recurring dysthymia, AD(H?)D, persistent aura, delayed sleep phase, esotropia, Hashimoto's disease.

I've never heard of RHLD before. According to what I could find on Google, it's just another name for NVLD.

Yeah, anxiety (social and otherwise), probably should have been a specific option on the poll. Anxiety overlaps AS quite a bit from my understanding..and a lot of the people who voted "other" probably voted anxiety.

I voted ADHD. In some respects, my ADHD is a lot stronger and a lot more debilitating for me than my AS is. I feel like the AS, in the social circles I gravitate in, just makes me seem quirky, which is not bad. But my ADHD has caused me problems in my personal and professional life. I have a total lack of "executive function", I can't plan, I'm disorganised (except when it comes to putting things in alphabetical order, etc) and I get easily distracted unless I'm doing something I enjoy immensly and then it's the opposite, I don't see or hear anything else around me.

When I was a child, I had symptoms of OCD. They're a lot more subdued now, I don't even think I'd meet the diagnosis criteria anymore.

Interesting, MeELC, I just dittoed you on another thread and I'm going to here too. I don't mind my AS, sure it's given me stumbling blocks, but it hasn't caused me nearly as much troubles as my ADHD (pi), and my selective mutism did. I also remember some OCD traits when I was really young but they disappeared too. I can't stand my ADHD though, for the same reasons you said. It's SO frustrating when it takes me 2-3 times as long to do things as it takes other people!

Hmmm...I have AS and I struggle with ADHD symptoms (never been diagnosed and never will be until my sleep, anxiety, and depression problems are fixed.) I actually think that that anxiety that comes with the AS is almost harder for me to handle (I have trouble leaving my house a lot of the time.) I do agree that not being able to pay attention is very frustrating but having chronic insomnia (I've had it for the past eight years) and having your issues contributed to that is just as frustrating. I have all the problems people with ADHD do (if I really wanted to push I could get diagnosed but my psychologist doesn't believe that I am ADHD.) I agree that it is very frustrating but personally my anxiety is more disabling. I also suffer from insomnia (chronic), migraines (also chronic), and back spasms/chronic pain that might be fibromyalgia.

if you have severe anxiety or chronic depression..you should probably go see someone about it.

I have anxiety issues, and at times it's just too much to really enjoy any public-like situations. If you're running into a similar situation, you may want to look into some help on it...I'm not on medication for it, but sometimes I wish I was since it can be really bad.

I don't know, i used antidepressants before but it didn't seem to have much effect..(other than make people think i'm an emo teenager apparently) Also, i'm on medication for some other things so it's probably not a good idea atm.
