wasn't serious, but fixed

Postby kevilars » Sun Jul 06, 2008 12:56 pm

I used to be that guy that said uh, uh, uh between everything, but after working a job as a telemarketer, and talking with people ALL the time, it worked itself out. I still slur all my words together though and I think the fast talking of being a telemarketer made it worse... oh and it sucked out my soul.

Hey,

Was it actually stuttering that you had?; or was it just that you always said 'umm', 'mmm', 'uh', etc between sentences and words? I think that many people do the latter and it might stem from a lack of confidence. Do you think it was a lack of confidence in your case?

probably not

I don't think I've ever had a confidence problem, it was just part of my speech patterns and it helped to have a job where I needed perfect speech patterns to do well.

i know i used to do the same thing, saying umm...uh... all the time, for me it was working as a cashier that fixed me. I think working with the public is the best way to cure using filler sounds. Honestly, now i cant stand it when people use filler sounds, and it makes me wonder what people thought of me before i had eliminated the use of them. I also talk rapidly, i wonder if that is why we used filler sounds, because we dont like siolence? i used to hate pauses in sentances, now i appriciate them, but i too, often slur my words together when i start talking too fast, i have lately been working on annunciation. I dont know if filler sounds are actual studdering though, i always just called them filler sounds.

the crazy thing

Postby kevilars » Mon Jul 07, 2008 7:33 am

the crazy thing is I used to do the umm, uhh, in more than one language, I even used to kind of do it when i practiced sign language, I would find myself either doing it out loud or just fiddling with my hands between words.

that is funny! i could understand if you were speaking spanish or something, but sign language, lol, i like that. When i practice french and i cant figure out what to say i often say ehhh...lol...it is like "uhhh" but with an accent! do you do that, say the uh with the accent of the language you're speaking? (well, id imagine that would be impossible with sign language, lol)

dialects

Postby kevilars » Mon Jul 07, 2008 9:01 am

well there are different dialects of sign language, but I guess you can't have accents unless you have Parkinson's disease or something.....

is there an "uhhh" in sign language, or filler hand motions? i would imagine it would be pretty useless if there was and if there was, they probably wouldnt teach it in a class, but i could be wrong.

I have watched people 'speak' sign-language to each other and they never used 'ummm' or 'uhhhh'. Instead, when there appeared to be a pause in what they were saying, they just held their hands out (i.e. making no particular sign) and just looked past the person they were 'speaking' to, as if trying to draw inspiration from something else. Like, when we say 'umm' or 'uhhh', we typically look away from the person/people we are speaking to too.

I'm not saying I pause and say ummm while signing, but between words I'll just fiddle with my hands to do no particular sign, I don't think there's an "umm" in ASL, but there are definitely fillers.
