Lepidoptophobia(sp) / Mottephobia and fear of flying insects

Postby Valkyrie » Wed Jul 13, 2005 3:14 pm

I hate butterflies and moths! They totally gross me out and make me fly into a panic running around screaming, and getting a good distance away, hiding myself and watching the gross thing to make sure it doesn't fly into my mouth or touch me.

I also hate flying insects, most I can handle by staying away from. But once a locust landed on my arm at the beach and I just ran screaming into the sea with all my clothes on to get it off. It was disgusting and I am feeling sick just thinking about it.

Cockroaches really do my head in though. Once, I turned on the light and one flew right at me. I locked myself in my kitchen in my nighty. The only way out was through the window, into the street, so I did this and locked myself out of my house rather than be near that roach. I had to call a neighbour at 4am to kill it for me so I could go back to bed. (It had flown in through my window, I don't have a roachy house.)

Why can't they invent something that wipes these vile creatures out? I look like such an idiot when I'm screaming my head off at bugs in front of people.

I don't mind small flying insects, but mildly large ones terrify me.

I am especially scared of butterflies and moths but only indoors.

And I didn't know cockroaches could fly, I am going to have nightmares now, it is a good job they don't live in this part of the world.

Flying roaches, thats evolutions worst joke on mankind. Arent they sickening enough on the ground that now they have to fly into our faces? I hate roaches, i cant sleep if i know one is around until is dead, and i cant really kill them that fast, i throw shoes at them from a distance then run the other way..hah.. like a girl, I am pathetic in that area.

I too suggest we erradicate roaches from this earth.

They have invented something, but it wont kill everything and there is no way to find every moth and flying insect even if it could. Good luck on eradicating roaches also, not going to happen.

Do you really think it would be wise to unbalance and destroy an entire global ecosystem just so some people with psychological issues can feel more comfortable? There's an easier solution to this. Insects aren't going to dissapear anytime soon and if they did so would humans.

Actually the "flying cockroach" that you were talking about is actually called a palmetto bug. Mostly found in tropical or subtropical regions

Yes they can be quite disgusting, especially flies and wasps, then again I find myself equally fascinated by insects due to their unusual appearance.

Dragonflies are the worst for me! The bigger, the more terrified and grossed out I am! All flying insects freak me out though. Plus the crawling and jumping ones. Dragonflies just fly right at you and the feeling and sound of their wings and bodies hitting you is the worst. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve had this fear. I know it’s not going to hurt me..it’s the gross factor. Yep I’ll be out somewhere and a bee or whatever will fly around me and I’ll start ducking and flinging myself this way and that looking like an idiot. Once I was sitting outside a tiki hut and a flying roach landed on me and I just started running around in circles trying to get it off. Everyone was just staring at me and I’m like “how’d you like to have a big roach on you?!” Lol I got free dessert though which was kool. If I even think a bug has landed on me, I’ll jump. Yes I’ve embarrassed myself ok many occasions but I don’t care. I can’t help how I react. It’s like an instinct I can’t control.
