Looking for CommuniCamp reviews

Postby beckye67 » Tue Oct 02, 2018 9:02 pm

I am considering sending my 6 year old daughter to CommuniCamp. It is a 3-4 day treatment program for kids with SM, put on by the SMart Center in PA.
Has anyone here been to this or similar camp for SM kids? I am looking for some unbiased reviews.

Hi. Yes, we did. It was a great decision for us because there are no SM specialists in my area. You can look for specialists here: https://www.selectivemutism.org/find-he ... fessional/

The treatment approach at SMart Center is different than most other specialists (such as CMI, Thriving Minds, Kurtz, etc..). They do not focus on "brave talking" or talking at all really. They focus on making your child more comfortable in all settings. Relieving the anxiety and the communication will follow. The parent training is great and they teach you how to interact with your child in public settings, allowing them to communicate in a way they are comfortable and how to make progress in baby steps. This approach is working well for my daughter. I don't think she would have done well with the other approaches. It's not an immediate cure. It requires lots of hard work after you get home, but it's great knowing what to do and seeing progress finally. They also offer web conferencing for followups if you hit a plateau and need more help after the camp.

Also, after posting here I eventually found the best place to get reviews and advice from other SM parents. This facebook group is fantastic: https://www.facebook.com/groups/parentsofsm/

Good luck!
