Disguising My Voice

Postby hnina » Sat Apr 01, 2017 1:36 am

I'm [a young teen] and I have had selective mutism for my whole life. I went to therapy when I was younger, and started to get better. My main breakthrough part was when I moved miles away from where I grew up. I was exposed to new people, change. Recently, however, my SM has only gotten worse. One of the things that bothers me the most is my voice. Because of my SM, I disguise my voice. I automatically speak in a higher voice. I did some research on it out of curiosity, and I found that this is not an uncommon characteristic of selective mutism. It still is very frustrating, however, because I constantly get remarks, imitations of my voice, all sorts of stuff like that because people think my voice is too high. Does anyone else disguise their voice?
Lately I've just been so detached from the rest of the world. All my friends are pretty social, and I don't know ANYBODY else that has SM or anything really close to it. I'd really just like to be able to actually talk to someone else who has gone through the same or similar things to what I have.

I'm a recovered selective mute. I haven't been one really since college, aside from rare cases I go through something that reminds me of a past trauma. The more anxious I get the more quiet I get.

Back in the day however, I recall I'd disguise my voice a lot, especially when talking to someone who didn't know me. If it was someone who did, I'd sometimes do a (for lack of better words) cutesy or playful voice. I think in a way it was me trying to trick myself into talking more, by convincing myself that if I said it in a "silly" way, whatever I said wouldn't be a big deal if it weren't taken seriously and it was on my own terms.

when talking to people i'm not familiar with (meeting new people, ordering food, etc.), my voice is different. i don't know how i'd describe it, but definitely unintentionally softer. i'm not even sure if other people notice it, but i'm not a fan.
