Friendship with an ex issue

I have an ex I have chosen to be friends with. We talk on Facebook often and see each other at social events occasionally. I often ask him for advice and for support on some personal matters.
I was talking to him about a male friend who had made a move on me recently.

Eventually, he said that he does not see me as a friend and that our relationship is unequal.
I suggested that I stop talking to him in this way and just see him as my ex or acquaintance. He said that our relationship will always be unequal and he will never ask me for support. I said I felt sad that he couldn't do this and that if he needed me I would be there, but I am still slightly confused by this comment....
