Prozac and alcohol

My wife and mother of my children of 19 years has been on Prozac for about 2 years. She has not been the same person since she started taking prozac. I cannot even talk to her anymore. She is more depressed, agitated, violent and just plain unhappy. I have noticed that her drinking has increased, almost a bottle of wine or more a day. I have heard that drinking alcohol on Prozac was very bad, and could be making her worse. Now she wants to divorce. I have gone to counseling with her to no avail, I am ready to give up. Can this combo of drugs and alcohol be part of the problem, if so I need to help her? Thanks

I'm really sorry to hear that your relationship with your wife has deteriorated.

In the counselling, did you talk about her drinking or Prozac use? Does your wife know about your concerns for her?

I don't know about the effects of alcohol and Prozac when combined. Hopefully another user here can tell you more.

I am not a professional but alcohol and prozac perse should not interact however 2 thoughts come to mind. Firstly alcohol is a depressant so will be undoing all the work the prozac is doing and may be making her more depressed explaining her behaviour. Another thought is prozac is not the right drug of choice for her, there are many other alternative antidepressants. What I would suggest is that you and her go to the Dr and explain what is going on and about the alcohol too and see what can be done. It may be that a referral to a drugs and alcohol MH team who can monitor both the depression and the alcohol would be a good idea.

I'm dealing with much of the same as u are. Have you tried to talk to her Doctor in private about this?
It will be hard to reason with her because she enjoys what she is doing to herself and she will say your being judgmental.
