Hey there, it is funny how you told him that you were dating another guy hoping that he would go to your rescue. I mean, if a girl told me she is dating someone, even if I like her, I would step aside. I would just get away really... and I have as a matter of fact.
About he believing that you have to change your behavior, I am sure he does just as you believe he does as well. The fact that you are sweet to him and have told him what you feel and made everything easier does not mean that you have done your best to change, or perhaps you have tried your best but it is not what he avoids from you. Perhaps it is another aspect of your behavior what makes him go away. Maybe it is out of your control but in any case, I don't think it would be healthy to get into a relationship where you have to change your natural behaviors in order to be liked.
