BP boyfriend with a dilema

Postby SweatingBullets7 » Tue Nov 19, 2013 1:05 am

Last week I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1. Needless to say, my girlfriend of 3 years has been taken aback by this. While it has explained to her the times where I can go from saying how much I love her one week to wanting to get away from her the next, it has caused a lot of stress for her. She still says that she wants to be with me but I dont know if I want to be with her.

I am not sure if there is a future for us. We have broken up three times, which is common for a bipolar relationship but both of our families are not too fond of the other person. The thing that really holds me up is that almost all of our close friends are the same and feel that if we do break up, they aren't going to want to hang out with the mentally ill friend.

Thoughts from the forum?

Thanks

SweatingBullets7 -

For me this is one of those questions that is difficult to reply too. It's not clear from your post, but you seem to express a degree of apathy toward the relationship independent of your Bipolar 1 diagnosis. Maybe. More on that below. Of course it happens that sometimes relationships don't last because one or the other person loses interest.

Questions though -

You mentioned a diagnosis, but not if you are being treated, and if you are being treated, how long were you advised to wait for the treatment to take effect. Are you being treated?

Related to that question, as you wrote this post is it possible you are in a downswing and that is affecting your sense of what you want?

Do you really feel your friends would judge you? I ask because most of the people I hang with know that Bipolar 1 is nobodies fault, really no different then having say diabetes, and is treatable
