Loud noises when falling asleep

Exploding Head Syndrome

Anyone else ever experience that? I can't say for sure, but I believe it has happened to me. I was drifting to sleep, while very short on sleep, and while under similar conditions I've often experienced Hypnic Jerks,

I've never experienced this before. It was as if a small-caliber handgun had been fired near my head. Very jarring and startling. Can't say I cared for it.

I looked around to see if something had burst, but so far I've found no evidence that anything untoward happened. Failing any physical evidence, and the fact that the sound sounded very close to my head, I can only suppose that it was the syndrome.

There has even been a couple times where someone clear as day crystal clear yells my name inside my mind. It's freaky as hell and one time it woke me up.
