Is this true?

Postby hjasshj » Mon Dec 13, 2010 7:26 pm

are there always someone who has experienced what you've gone through before you?

(PS, i have a mental disorder whom one of the characteristics is delay in doing/experiencing things "normal" people experience, that's why i believe in that word of wisdom).

since my disability makes me doing things later than people who dont have it, this saying becomes a fact, doesn't it?

I see what your saying. There is a quote that says What ever is Most Personal Is Most General.
I think this is true to varying degrees. I do not think that someone else lives the exact same life as another, but the most painful emotions and fears are shared by many many others. So are the joys, etc.
Why do you ask? Are you hoping to find someone to relate to your specific history?

If you want to sort out an issue regarding PTSD (the forum this is in) then you really need to focus more on the emotional relation you can share with others than the idea of someone having gone through exactly what you may have.
I am someone who has gone through quite a bit. I was diagnosed with CPTSD 7 1/2 years ago. I went through extensive treatment and have recovered. I didn't know it was possible. I had never met anyone who had been through what I had, and It felt lonely at times. I have come across a few who have had some similarities to my own story but in the end that part wasn't as important as knowing that my emotions were normal given the circumstances.
That saying I quoted could mean literal personal experiences, or as I believe, it means that we all experience the same emotions. Knowing and feeling that kindred connection can be a powerful sustaining hope at times. Just knowing someone has felt similar things (like terror, horror anxiety, panic etc-PTSD common emotions) can help us see if they made it through so can we.
I'm here to listen, if you feel comfortable enough to share a little more about yourself. Take your time, I'm not going anywhere!
With Hope,
