What I have done with respect to writing was to sample everything. I read a ton of poetry. A lot of Whitman because I don't believe in strict form. Most of the poetry today is free verse or prose poetry although I have met some individuals and read some authors who tackle meter and rhyme with such style and grace.
If you are new to writing I would suggest free verse, simply because the rules are nullified to a degree. I think poets have an innate ability to find their own true voice. If you think outside the box, and I suspect that many of you do if you are on this sight, than that is where you should start. The most important thing I think is to be yourself. If you find that you are forcing out words to create a story or an image or an emotion than you are trying to hard. Just let it find you. Forget that anyone may read it someday and let it all hang out. And the dictionary is your best friend. When I feel stuck but I know what I am feeling, I will open up the dictionary and find a beautiful word that expresses how I feel and use it in my poem. It gives me a little jolt.
