NYMPHOMANIAC - Lars von Trier movie

Postby cusco » Thu Apr 24, 2014 6:14 am

I am a movie fan but then who isnt. I mean to say I will go and see anything that isnt an obvious turkey or aimed at the dim witted who just like to see stuff explode and lots of guns and stuff.
Not wishing to appear a snob of course - I will happily watch a Batman movie but not so eager to watch something like Hulk 2 or Gunbots vs Spiders 3 lol
Has anyone else watched the recent Lars von Trier double feature called Nymphomaniac ?
Parts of it are truly superb and Charlotte Gainsbourg is utterly brilliant as the eponymous lead character.
I mention it here as it deals with pedophilia in a refreshingly understanding way that neither justifies nor excuses but just seeks to honestly define.
The scene where it happens is in Nymphomaniac 2 where she coerces an erection from a man tied to a chair whilst relating a pedophile fantasy to him - I personally found her incredibly sexy in this movie and that particular scene is erotic on several levels other than for a pedophile.
I recommend both chapters 1 and 2 highly - not easy viewing at times but very intelligent and thought provoking and hugely erotic in places with certain scenes that arent easily forgotten.

Huge movie fan too here  . Thanks for the suggestion. I saw the trailer many times on tv but never considered the option of watching it.

You`re welcome Elkhan - in my opinion it was certainly not out to "shock" or play to the peanut gallery.
Lars von Trier is one of the few genuinely challenging and original thinking filmmakers out there.
He is never going to appeal to the masses and he is different things to different people it seems.
He certainly is a genuine intellect and Nymphomaniac is a refreshingly honest approach to the sexual being.
It really does restore your faith in cinema in that it neither dumbs down, nor tries to show how clever it is. Covers all manner of sexual power play, gender roles, social convention and sexual dysfunction.
Hope you find it as brilliant as I did. I really think that Dogville and Dancer in the Dark can be regarded as cinematic genius too.
None is easy viewing or conventional but both are genuinely original, powerful and like nothing you ever saw before.
