"Both APAs have just released press releases in response to right wing fundamentalist complaints that the new DSM 5 classifies pedophilia as a sexual orientation. The press releases ignore the mental health of people with the diagnosis and instead advocate their prosecution—an interesting approach for so-called mental health organizations. The press releases can be found at:

http://www.dsm5.org/Documents/13-67-DSM ... 103113.pdf

http://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/ ... ental.aspx " (1)

"Recently the American Psychiatric Association (APA) issued a statement in which it admits it made an error, a mistake it wishes to correct with its publication of the DSM-5. A text it drafted refers to paedophilia as a sexual orientation. The APA now wishes to retract that use of the term ‘sexual orientation’ and replace it with the term ‘sexual interest’. ... The APA has prioritized the optics of social control and a concern to aid legal prosecutions of those whose desire incorporates the child and the youth. The hat they wear is that of the police officer...." (2)

"I will just add that recognising paedophilia as a sexual orientation is a really big deal. The scientists have been moving towards a consensus in recent years that paedophilia is indeed a sexual orientation; the problem lies with the organisations’ politically minded “leadership”, who really amount to a craven followership of whichever lobby they are most scared of offending. The issue is important because there are already laws against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Paedophiles of any age who stay within the law would benefit hugely if discrimination against them in employment, housing, access to sports and leisure facilities, engagement in community activities, etc., were to be made illegal via logical application of current law to a newly recognised orientation. ... Such a development could have a massive impact in lifting the psychological pressure now bearing down on MAPs, and especially on young ones." (3)

regarding that picture if the teen was an exclusive pedophile I'd actually think suicide is a far better option than living a life, tortured by intense fantasies that can never be fulfilled and be forced to undertake expensive and risky therapy/medication.

I was SO angry when I read about this. Way to take away all hope.

Being an exclusive pedophile does not mean you are "tortured" by intense fantasies. It doesn't have to be such a negative aspect of one's life. It's not as if being sexually attracted exclusively to children means that you absolutely hate everything about every adult. There are other kinds of relationships that adults can offer, too. You just learn to focus on those more. I dare say that can be equally as fulfilling as a romantic or sexual relationship, depending on the person. Life isn't all about ######6.

My impression is that they want to, but due to all the outcry they sort of skirt around doing so, like the way they describe it an interest now. If there wasn't so much backlash I have a feeling it wouldn't have been an "error". I think had this been classified years ago, before so much social media and coverage it would've been successful. Unfortunately the precursor or the thing that opened the door to reclassification seems to have been homosexuality, which also was held back by ignorance, so basically both should've changed much sooner.

It's terrible being exclusive and not having help. It's hard to smile, even if for no reason at all. When will things change?
I'm alone by choice. It's just not my choice.

D.I.D:

This is a repeat of 20ish years ago. DSM-iv also dropped pedo as a mental illness, DSM-ivTR, Text Revision, was the APA putting it back in after similar right-wing outrage. But this time mere pedophilia without act or anguish is no longer a mental illness, that's a big shift from the previous edition.

What kind of help do you want? Certainly you have found people to relate to on this forum, so that must help somewhat. Do you do any research about pedophilia and related subjects? Educating yourself on this stuff can make you feel better about it. Taking a look at this website might be a good idea: http://www.virped.org/ Have you considered getting therapy? Are you involved in any social activities / groups in your community?

I assure you that nothing will change if you just sit around on internet forums, feeling bad about yourself and waiting for change to happen. You have to go out into the world and find things that you are passionate about. If you are already trying, keep trying and eventually you will succeed. Your signature says something about being "alone by choice, but not my choice." I'm not sure what that means exactly, but you must acknowledge that you don't have to be alone just because you have certain problems that you can't talk to most people about.

Though, considering these APA people are reptilians, they probably wont budge even if a lot of young kids kill themselves in the coming years over this. I'm sure a lot parents would feel joyful to bury that little "blemish on their reputation".

Or perhaps I'm just super cynical.
