When you have a compulsive to do something. You need to find ways to avoid it.
Example 1: If you have to wash your hands so frequently because you thinks its dirty, then go out and use your hands and play with the dirt until the anxiety settles off. If you have a tendency to check many times to check your door, then explained to someone in your family and ask them to check it for you. You give them that job. You can go back to lock doors yourself when you no longer feels that obsessive feelings. Basically, to stop doing something, you need to do the opposite of it or to avoid it.

I only wish the solution were that easy. Things just go WAY deeper then all that. W/ your example....if you were worried that the stove was not turned off by you...then you'd be obsessing that the person you asked to do it forgot...or questioning whether you truly asked the person to do it. It's just so complicated.........

Believe it or not I know how bad it can gets. Obsessive with your action is nothing when you compare to the fact that you your thoughts obsessed with your own thoughts? Confused? Hell yeah.

You must find ways to find it, the longer you let it be that way, the harder to get rid of it. I've read alot of things and they said that complete recovery is possible.

I said you must find a way to "fight" it. I mispelled.

Anyway, OC is like an addiction similiar to drugs, If you fight it long enough and not give in it will go away...trust me.

Have you experienced ocd. I do try to fight my compusions. Which mine are checking. Like rechecking my route when I'm driving. And checking stove and coffee pot. It makes the anxiety intense but I know to give into it will put me going into circles literally. But it is hard too. I usually fight one obsessive thought till another one , or bump in the road, takes its place in my mind. I know is irrational but i can't figure out how to let thought goooooo. And move on to other activities. Sometimes can - sometimes can't. Any ideas here?

Mine has been with me five years. It won't go away no matter how much I try to stop, or pray. If I conquer one obsession, a new one surfaces. This never-ending cycle leads me to believe that it's a mental illness and that I need help, possibly meds. I just haven't done anything about it. I know what I'm going through isn't just some temporary thing that'll pass.

I as well try to fight my obsessions and compulsions. For once I'd like to look at something that is clean and be content w/ the idea that it is truly ok and I don't have to feel this intense need to clean more or then I'd be considered less then what I am now or that I might feel out of control of my environment and self. It's a very complicated thing. Sure....I don't doubt this is much to do w/ things engrained in my mind. I have a good idea where this drive ...compulsion, etc. comes from....identifying the problem is the easy part....overcoming it is a LOT harder. I've made small steps in progress...but I often have setbacks. There is no one magic answer out there that can cover everyone. Each person has to overcome this in their own way...what works for one....may not work for others. And what works for me...is only shortterm.

I appreciate your advice...but it's just way to simple and not realistic for my situation.
