Since my son was eight he always wants my wife and I to tell him nothing bad will happen. He has a fear of being sick, Mostly vomiting or getting a high fever. He is fourteen now and everyday before school we have to pinky swear and promise again and again and again that nothing bad will happen to him or to anyone around him.. Of course I know something bad could happen so I would not know what to do with him if something bad did happen. My wife and I tried to not promise anything and he would cry and have extreme panic attacks. So every morning as soon as he wakes up the first thing he says is "Promise nothing bad will happen?" If he has a headache the first thought that comes to his head is maybe I have a brain tumor and then he makes us promise he doesnt have one..it doesnt bother me that I have to promise everyday but I dont want my son to live in fear.. He has come a long way already but does this sound like OCD to you?
Thanks for your time,
Christian

Hello Christian
I'm sorry to hear your son is going through such a difficult time. It sounds very much like what I was like at that age, although I didn't really confide in my parents. That he comes to you for support is a really good thing!
To me it sounds more like he has some sort of panic or nervous disorder (such as a phobia). Obviously none of us can be sure from what you've written, and I would urge you to take him to see a counsellor. I'm not sure what country you live in, but if its the US I would try to avoid seeing a medical doctor for now, as they'll just medicate him. A psychologist or other type of counsellor can usually do a better job with a nervous condition. Obviously this is just my non-expert opinion though!
