ocd any advice?

Postby ghost8 » Fri May 28, 2010 1:40 am

Maybe someone has a similiar experience to this. I realize I have a
bit of ocd- which before I became educated I thought of it as obsessive
handwashing, repetitive ritualistic behavior etc... As It relates to me I will
overanalze things again and again which I know very well the answer,
and second guess myself. The biggest part of this is worrying about that
I will react this way and getting tensed up. Just this type of thinking will
set me u for repetitive thinking such as :did I hear the answer right? Or Oh no
I'm starting to feel that anxious feeling of making myself miss something in a an explanation because I'm getting worried about these reactions and cant concentate. I also have to know every detail about something as if
missing something is abig deal- is doesnt matter how unimportant it is.
In other words worry about worry. The good news is I have got better.
This made it hard to be a student years ago and math was quite difficult.
No meds except xanex. Iwas taking celexa which I hear can help and
I'm trying to rememberif it did but since this is situational I'm not sure.
If it did I think only a little and I hate sex side effects. I feel I can help myself by having a clean mindset because at times when I clear my mind this does not happen. Also meditation. I dont believeI I have ADD because my concentation is OK. I just really have to learn to to trust myself.Advice,Comments? Any similiar behavior?

Well, keep up what you're doing (recovery-wise), because it seems as if you are improving. What you're describing is pretty much OCD in my book, and you're right to mention/imply how OCD is not just about excessive hand-washing et al.. I do'nt know what you mean when you say that you have to trust yourself though - What do you mean by this? You didn't mention if you are seeing a therapist either, but a therapist can be a help for people with OCD.

Things such as meditation don't work for eveyone, of course, but for others it can be a great help. Apparently unhelpful things might just be the things that help you too, so embrace new things and challenge them to be the one thing to help you. Don't stay hidden in your OCD bubble - peak (or even burst) out every now and then to explore new things.

Thank you Chucky for your input. When I say 'trust myself 'I mean not to second guess myself and follow my instincts which are usually good. I know with this illness it can be besides the point because you may realize the repetative thoughts/behaviors do not
make sense but it is effective for me. Maybe not all the time but alot. Because with all the negativity and apprehension regarding
my obessive thoughts - which takes on a life on its own- is the fact that I am capable and can be successful . And if Im not- so
what. I went to therapist for a short time and was as open as possible but I found myself rehashing the same stuff all the time.
I was not impressed with the therapist who when i mentioned cbt said I did not need cause I seemed to be aware of things and
challenging my illogical thoughts. Actually realized my bit of ocd,gad on my own - had minimal incite from pschgst. I took meds
Celexa,Lexapro but they put me in a fog ,hurt my lobido and were minimally effective. Any advice regarding cbt programs, natural
meds or anything else? I believe I can help myself

Hi,

I don't know much about 'natural' meds, but Lexapro was the [proper] med that I took. i took it for four years and I really had positive results with it. It is a very slow-acting drug, however, and I always tell people taking it to be patient. Regarding realising the GAD and OCD on your own, that is a common occurance. To be fair, however, my psychiatrist recognised the OCD in me, but he failed to see the Asperger's Syndrome. granted, patients aren't always the best at talking about themselves during therapy though - right? Therefoer, it's dificult for professionals to diagnose with 100% accuracy.
