Obsessive cleaning in my house...by mother

Postby turis » Tue Oct 30, 2018 6:55 pm

My wife and I life in our house and we've been married for 2.5 years. My mother comes to our house 2-3 times per week to constantly clean and do laundry. Me and my wife have had enough with this as it is our house and my mother comes in when we are not home to clean the house, the kitchen, garage and laundry. My mom lives about 30 minutes away in her own house.

I have told her numerous time, at least 20-30 times or more to stop doing this and to stop moving our things around and cleaning as we don't want it. We are in our 30's. My wife has had enough of this and I concur, how can we stop my mother from doing this?

This behaviour is strange and i was told is something like OCD. I have decided very shortly to change the house keys to the house so she cannot come in anymore by herself, but before I do this, is there something that can be done? Are there behavioural psycologists that can help? Or any ideas?

Well, if you can convince her she needs to see a therapist... until then I don't really know. My first thought was what you're going to do- change the locks. By the way, Kwikset I think has some locks that you can change the lock with a special tool and a new key, without having to change out the hardware. Very convenient- if you have to be gone and absolutely need to let Mom (or anyone else) have a key, you can then just change the lock keying when you get back, in a jiffy, and lock her back out again

Ofc she's probably going to be pretty put out by the locks being changed, but I don't know- parents can be pretty good at making us feel guilty for having 'made' them discipline us as kids... I suppose in a way you could turn the tables on Mom now, and just make it clear that it's happening, because she made you do it- it's inappropriate for her to come over to Not Her House when you're not home, and mess around in it. It's your mess, you like it that way, and you wouldn't go over and mess up her home, she wouldn't like you doing that to her, well you feel the same way about her cleaning up your mess.
