Struggling with intrusive thoughts

Postby JHourne13 » Thu Jun 23, 2016 3:35 am

I've been struggling with intrusive thoughts for awhile but there's just some days where it really gets to me. For example, times when I'm really looking forward to something and I want everything to be just perfect. Suddenly, an intrusive thought completely unrelated to what I'm doing comes into my head and then more come and I keep fighting it off till it's over. I don't get to enjoy my moment and what I've been looking forward to, instead I'm trying to fight off those thoughts. It's getting pretty frustrating, especially watching TV shows. I'm finding that I'm having to rewind my show quite often because I'm missing what's being said trying to rid these thoughts

Does anyone have any tips on ridding these unwanted/intrusive thoughts?

intrusive thoughts are a b.

my advice is never popular (but always best. ;) )

you gotta get to root of where this stuff is coming from and start from there. intrusive thoughts are a symptom, surface stuff. it is important to dig deep, or they typically reoccur and with shifting themes.

as for now, try and sit with them vs. fighting them. eventually they will dull. imagine a large bully screaming at you. you try and fight back, they see your reaction and laugh. practice standing still while they waste their energy, attempting to gain attention. once you tire them, they will eventually get bored and move on. it is all about your reaction. remember that.

don't try and watch something if the thoughts are buzzing. in this moment, you are easily distracted and will be constantly reminded of the thoughts each time you rewind.

they are just thoughts. think of all the other thoughts you have on a minute-to-minute basis. what to eat, what to wear, if it is going to rain. remember, intrusive thoughts are just like thinking about the weather. they just stand out because they are nasty. they can't harm you, though.

exercise.

good luck.
