Exposure and response prevention

Postby tom117 » Fri Jul 17, 2015 4:51 pm

Hi there! I am recieving thoughts that are intrusive and am trying my best to battle them. They are not HOCD but have suffered with that before so would appreciate no spike for that. Thanks. I am just wondering how I know if I am doing ERP the correct way. For example, I am playing a video game and I think What if i have anxiety whenever I play video games in the future and can never enjoy them again? This gives me anxiety. My understanding is that I am to continue with this thought and let it be there, without going anywhere else before the anxiety goes down. Is this correct or is this rumination on the thought. Any advice on erp or other ways to rid myself of these silly anxiety driven thoughts would be appreciated.

I can't speak to the ERP, I am not an expert, but yes, you play through it. It took me a long time to adopt such a stance, but now whenever my thoughts become irrational and try to control my behavior through compulsions, I play through it.

However, anxiety is going to damper the "good" feelings of any experience. In early 2000s when I was playing video games, I had similar issues. At times when I was playing, the anxiety would affect the enjoyment, but eventually the concentration required to play the game took over and I forgot about the "What ifs..."
