Hi, I'm a new member, so please inform me if there is anything wrong in my post!
I’m a 18 year old female and have been diagnosed OCD by a psychiatrist about a year ago
I always find bodily excretions, such as urine and faeces, or things like my genitals and its hair extremely disgusting. I will feel the need of washing around five times with soap when I accidentally touched them. I tried convincing myself that it isn’t normal, but failed. Due to such constant washing, my bathing time usually take 1 hour. Is this normal?
My sister constantly tries to persuade me to wash lesser but when she isn’t around, I will just return to my normal washing routine. I feel like I’m quite attention seeking due to that…
To conclude, is it normal to wash for more than 5 times if someone touched bodily excretions, such as urine and faeces, or things like genitals and its hair? What is the average showering/bathing time?
Thank you very much for reading

Hi there. I don't know if your washing is normal or not but I wanted to let you know that I also have these same worries and phobias. When I do anything in the bathroom, there is a specific routine that must be followed in order to become clean, because I cannot fathom the thought of urine or feces remaining on my skin. My showers are marathon showers too, much to my Husbands dismay, but he accepts this as he knows it just makes me feel better. But, I just wanted to let you know your not alone out there, there are others.

It isn't "normal", since average hand washing time after going to the bathroom/before eating is about 30 seconds and that's just sanitary. Washing your hands an approximate number after only touching certain excretions or body parts is definitely OCD. Are you talking to a psychiatrist? That's my number 1 suggestion. Also, exposure therapy in your case would probably be best. Touch an area on your body that triggers you on purpose, then wait 5 minutes and wash your hands 4 times then stop. Then after that starts to feel a little more comfortable throughout time, cut down to 3, then 2, then just after you go to the bathroom and after you take a shower. Then cut doing it after a shower all together. It could take a long, long time and you could have slip ups, but it'll definitely be worth it to expose yourself.

No, this washing seems excessive to me. What matters though is this behavior having a significant negative effect on your life?
